The WWE hyped Kurt Angle as their first Olympic gold medalist. He won the gold medal in heavyweight freestyle wrestling at the 1996 Olympics, and remarkably, did so with a broken neck.
Two short years later and he would enter the WWE, and he won the WWE championship in 2000.
