13 Great Wrestlers Stuck With Terrible Gimmicks

BannerThis exercise is always entertaining to me. Every wrestler works his or her way up in the business, and part of that journey oftentimes sees them adopting new personas at different stops. Sometimes the change was necessitated by a promotion trademarking the ring name. Sometimes the wrestler or promoter pushed the change because the previous name and gimmick were just bad.

While I think things are much better today — we aren’t likely getting any Goons or Doinks any time soon — there are some current wrestlers who were saddled with some horrific gimmicks at one point or another. Let’s take a look at those, and some others throughout wrestling history.

Terra Ryzing (Better known as Triple H)

If I was so inclined, I could probably ding Hunter twice. First of all, he got attention working as Terra in WCW. While working under that moniker, he was noticed by WWE officials and was recruited to join the Stamford company. Even if you want to say the gimmick wasn’t bad, you have to agree the name sure was.

But then, he came to WWE and became the blue-blooded Hunter Hearst Helmsley. Even that gimmick was a bit tough to swallow, but through the Attitude Era and DX, that blue-blood became Triple H, and the rest, as they say, is history.

Unless they’re the rocks relatives, wwe will try until the ratings are 0 before they figure out the usos and reigns are garbage

are we not being very generous calling a lot of these guys “great” wrestlers?????

John Tenta was never known as Shark Attack in WCW. He was called The Shark. Also, how on Earth did you not mention Mike Awesome’s “Fat Chick Thriller” gimmick? Awesome had that one before becoming That 70’s Guy.

    • Joseph Lisnow

Awesome with the worst gimmicks outside of ECW.

Completely forgot about that one. Or blocked it out. That was a perfect example of what was wrong with WCW back then. Spend money for a good talent and then give them a horrible gimmick.

clearly you assume too much. All came from my head, and until I read your comment, I had never heard of that site, much less visited it. And I have no plans to visit it now.
