There were so many to choose from, but perhaps the fact that Bayley was not drafted, may have been the biggest. My bets were on her to be picked up, early on in the show, and I was actually shocked when it did not happen at all. I somewhat knew the boat had passed, when Nia Jax was drafted to RAW; and I have a feeling that Bayley may get a special debut, all her own, come Battlefield. There is so much speculation on who Sasha Banks mystery partner may be, when she faces Charlotte and Dana Brook … can’t help but wonder if Bayley is the lady, Banks is referring to when it comes to this Battleground match.
There were, in my eyes, a few. So, here are my top three.
1-The NXT draftees. Finn Balor was fine. American Alpha, too. A case can be made for Nia Jax, too, considering she’s one of the top three women NXT had. But the other three picks? Questionable, to be sure. I am sure WWE had reasons, storyline or otherwise, as to why names like Bayley and Samoa Joe weren’t picked, but they should have come up with a storyline reason why they weren’t able to be drafted.
2- Rollins over Ambrose. Not that I disagree, as I think Rollins is the guy you would want to build the brand around. But, Dean Ambrose has the World Championship. That has to account for something, right? I thought the combo of Ambrose + Belt would have him go first (though I also thought the champion was not required to be drafted, and would instead appear on both shows). So taking Rollins over Ambrose was a stunner.
3-Charlotte going in the first round. Or whatever they are calling it. But to have the Women’s Champion taken as the 2nd overall champion picked? That’s awesome. That’s WWE putting it’s money where it’s mouth is.
Honorable mention for Finn Balor going before John Cena.
The first five picks were the best of the Draft. Dean Ambrose and Seth Rollins seemed to be easy candidates to make the exclusive group, but the other three choices were stunning; and I mean in a good way. In seven months, AJ Styles has proved to fans he deserves a WWE Championship run and being the fourth pick shows the company has lots of faith in the international star. Since we’re on the topic of international stars, Finn Balor appears to be getting a massive push by rounding out the top five. Charlotte going number three was shocking, but well deserved as she’s set the bar high for women since winning the title almost a year ago.
John Cena and Brock Lesnar not being selected in the opening round was a major shocker; more so for the 15 time WWE Champion. The biggest disappoint was Bayley not being drafted. I thought she was going to be the first NXT pick, especially after Charlotte went to RAW. It’s disappointing Bayley wasn’t drafted.
