Ask WNZ: Does Reigns Bring Belt Down?

WWE Championship
In what might seem to  be a crazy question, we ask this: considering that the WWE Championship match isn’t getting a ton of attention thus far heading into MITB, is the belt being brought down by Reigns?

Dorathy Gass:

There have been good champions in the past, and there have been terrible champions. When Sheamus held the title, people complained he was an awful champion. When Seth Rollins held it, people complained that he hadn’t won a single match, on his own, or cleanly (despite the fact that he was a heel). Brock Lesnar’s reign as champion was questioned because he won the title, and then disappeared; having very limited title defenses in the approximate seven months he was WWE World Heavyweight Champion, and not even showing up to some pay-per-views. I remember people debating on this very site, as to whether or not Lesnar’s absence brought down the WWE title. There was even a time that people questioned Hulk Hogan as a WWE champ back in the day.

I don’t know if Roman Reigns will go down in the history books as the ‘best WWE champion of all time’ (based on his last three, he’s still young, you never know). Still, he is consistently defending his title, and winning on his own. Is it possible to bring the WWE title down at the end of the day? Maybe, but all three reigns (including this last one) haven’t even been long enough to ‘bring the title down’, in my opinion. At the end of the day, while there are some who don’t like Reigns; there will always be critics of a certain superstar, regardless of who holds the championship.

 John Deegan:

Short answer? I don’t think so.

Longer answer? I think the booking has been intentional by WWE, and is less an indication of Reigns pulling the title down, as it is WWE realizing that it has other, hotter programs going on that are worthy of the spotlight. Now, that in and of itself can be an indictment of Roman Reigns as champion-I don’t deny that-but I think, or I am willing to hope, that it’s more indicative that WWE Creative staff have finally realized that there’s more to the roster than whomever is holding the big belt, and that sometimes it’s OK to share the spotlight.

But, totally wouldn’t be shocked if Reigns drops the belt sooner than later.

 Joseph Lisnow:

I don’t think Roman Reigns holding the title is doing damage. The belt represents who the WWE sees as their top star on a loaded roster and right now that’s Reigns. There hasn’t been much attention on the Seth Rollins – Reigns feud, but the Money in the Bank match usually gets the most attention from fans. The unpredictability of MITB is what makes people tune in. Reigns is no paper champion, so we need to get used to him with the gold. John Cena went through a similar timeline like Reigns about 10 years ago. He persevered and has made the belt even greater. I expect Reigns to do the same or have a similar path.

Sheamus didn’t have time to be a good champion lol SMH

  • ‘Drowen Hart #NN #NBNC ?????

I don’t think he’s bringing the title down. I just think they’re using him less because they know that the fans will boo him no matter what goes on his matches or in his storylines. So in a way, they’re protecting him.
