Can Darren Young Become Great Again With The Cross-Face Chicken Wing?

WWE Hall of Fame
I think he can.

The vignettes with Bob Backlund and Darren Young, hyping up Young’s singles’ return have been highly entertaining. For those can remember, well past his return to the then WWF in 1992 to 1997, 1999, 2000, and his stint in TNA, where he portrayed a crazy persona, a shadow, some could say, of his former great self; Bob Backlund was a legend, and one of the best technical wrestlers of his time. Most know he is the second longest-reigning WWE Champion of all time, and held that championship twice, as well as one half of the WWE tag team titles. It’s no surprise, he was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2013, and not only was his flawless in-ring performance legendary, his Cross-face Chicken Wing was an iconic submission … something wrestling fans today, don’t see a lot of.

Now if the idea is to make Darren Young ‘great again’, then the humorous vignette of July 4th, that became a game changer, turned in that very direction, when Backlund, generously handed Young his finisher, to call his own.

And then Twitter exploded.

The Cross-Face Chicken Wing is unique, aggressive, and brutal. Much like me, it seems many fans are chomping at the bits to see what Darren Young can do with it. Can it make him ‘great again’? Only time will tell. However, a solid finisher, especially a submission move, in a superstar’s repertoire is key to in-ring success; not only for the wrestler, but the persona they are playing.

While Darren Young using this submission, and how he adds his personal style to it, will play a factor in determining, if his return to singles action is great; booking the submission as a strong finisher, and how Young’s colleagues sell the move are also important elements.

Darren Young has always been great. From his stint with Nexus, to his tag team championship reign with Titus O’Neil, as the Prime Time Players. What I like about this gimmick is the addition of Backlund, who is highly entertaining, and their mix of chemistry and humor together.

The promos have been great so far, but what I am most interested in now, is seeing Darren Young in the ring, and watching it all unfold. Who will he feud with? What will his take on Chicken Wing be? More importantly, what exact role will Bob Backlund play?

He’s never been great. He is decent in the ring, and on the mic. If he gets a good following he may be able to go after the mid card title in the future.

There is no more Intergender Champion, but I doubt he would win that either.

PLEASE..great again??? wow I wrote here when this trump=lite gimmick started he never was great to begin the “again” is absurd and I totally disagree, the promos have been horrid, backlund is terrible and the angle sucks.the cross face?? who cares? yeah maybe they’ll give Young a slight push but he has no legs to make it and go the distance and I’m not even talking about champ I’m just saying he might have a 6 month run, once around the block until it gets old I don’t enjoy saying negative things BUT this is more honesty than negativity
