Dear WWE Creative, Don’t Forget Paige

Dear WWE Creative,

I can’t believe I’m about to rant to you, considering the incredible Monday Night RAW and SmackDown you just gave us this week. On top of that, women’s wrestling is at an all-time high, as all female talents continue to kill it; more importantly, you are giving them the opportunity to do so. Well done on that.

Maybe this isn’t so much a rant, as a reminder about someone. Someone you were once quite high on. Someone who use to carry the women’s division way back when. Someone who still plays a prominent role as a WWE spokesperson in the media and events; has had roles in your WWE Studios’ movies; and seems to be your reality T.V. darling.

Paige had an incredible first year, debuting in 2014, having epic matches with AJ Lee, and capturing the Divas Championship not once, but twice. Thrusted into the spotlight, she had plenty of time on RAW, SmackDown, and was even placed on Total Divas and given a role along with Miz in the WWE Studios’ movie “Santa’s Little Helper”. She was all of a sudden WWE’s ‘IT’ girl.

Which made it understandable as to why she needed to play second fiddle – for a little while after her big year. She had been trusted into title picture programs from the moment she stepped foot in the main roster, and while she did lose her feud with Nikki Bella, I think the audience all realized early on, WWE’s plans were to give Bella the championship record in the long run; and someone needed to help with her title reign push. When the divas revolution hit, as a fan, I realized Paige’s role. A veteran after all, she was there to show these NXT ladies the main roster ropes, help heighten these divas, make them familiar to the audience, and push them over. A few loses certainly does not hurt superstar in the least.

But, the divas revolution has turned into women’s wrestling, the three NXT superstars that were once newbies to the main roster have successfully crossed over. Paige is rarely seen on RAW, and if she is, she is playing the stereotypical ‘insert female wrestler here’ role. While watching SmackDown this week, Paige lost to Emma, and I couldn’t help but wonder: when was the last time Paige won a singles match? I can’t recall.

And I get that Emma needs a push, and I love that Emma is getting a push, but sadly, this comes at the expense of Paige. Is there some sort of backstage heat on Paige we are not aware of?

I’m not saying that I think she should be thrusted back into the title the picture. And it has to be a challenge for you Creative, to manage the ever revolving cycle of pushing a talent, holding one back; when to give someone the win, a title reign, when to let a talent hang on the sidelines. But I hate to see such a wonderful, talented wrestler get lost in the shuffle. Some airtime would nice. A program where she wins a match or two and begins to look strong again would be a refreshing a change for Paige as well.

At the young age of 23 years, I don’t worry about Paige … much. She has a lot of wrestling in her, and a bright future ahead. I just don’t want anyone within the creative, or the WWE Universe, to forget about Paige. She helped start up this women’s wrestling revolution, and I think its time she starts enjoying it too.

She is my favourite female wrestler hands
Down, I think she’s brilliant, I’m sure wwe will
Come back around to her though.

    • Dorathy

i’m sure too. She’s also still quite young, and a push can always erase all of this. It’s cyclical.

Im sure paige will get a push again but do to her being too young and already accomplishing alot the wwe is going wit the other women who haven’t accomplish anything in the wwe yet. Just like randy orton he was too young when he debuted and got a strong push but the push stopped in 2005 and the push came back in 2007 thats happening with paige now.

    • Dorathy

      Good point.

I wouldn’t mind seeing Paige wrestle somewhere else

      Lol anywhere but TNA

She’s been a fixture on their “pet project” Total Divas, so it’s not as if her career’s been a complete loss since her initial push. But I wonder at times whether WWE values her so much as that out-of-ring ambassador/special projects person that it’s coming at the expense of her in-ring career.
Still, as has been mentioned, she’s the youngest among the ladies, and if she stays healthy, she could be in the ring for WWE for 10 more years if she wants to. This is the way it’s supposed to be IMO. I hate to say it, but when Paige debuted a couple of years ago and jumped to the top of the Divas division, she was more or less queen of a scrap heap. She never got over to the degree that she really deserved because I don’t think fans were yet convinced of WWE’s efforts to make women’s wrestling be taken seriously again.

The other thing I think is hurting Paige is that she debuted so much earlier than the other girls that she wasn’t really around for the “Four Horsewomen” era. While Becky, Charlotte, Sasha, and Bayley were all putting great matches on with each other down in NXT. Paige was ‘stuck’ on the main roster wrestling the Bellas and AJ. She didn’t really get much of a chance to establish chemistry with the new group. Out of the three, she knows Becky the best from their time together in the UK, but even then, Becky was hurt at the time and limited to a manager role.

Finally, at the end of the day, it’s still much harder for the ladies to get their screen time. We have probably about 7 ladies that can be average or better in the ring but aside from whatever match Charlotte’s in (in which the champ will usually go over on TV unless they’re trying to establish a new #1 contender) there may be one more match at best on an episode of RAW. We still haven’t gotten to the point where the ladies can get separate non-title feuds. But I’d give it maybe a year or so. Maybe after Bayley gets to the main roster and one more (Carmella’s solid, Asuka’s great, Alexa needs more seasoning but wouldn’t embarrass herself) and the ranks fill out a bit.

She had that concussion around Christmas time as well that kept her out of the ring until mid to late February and by that time the Wrestlemania title match and lead up program was almost set in stone.

They either need to bring in tag belts or do a kind of unofficial brand split and have a couple of women’s matches on each brand featuring different women, with obviously the title picture showcased on Raw.

The other thing they could do with Paige is bring in Nikki Storm, Katie Lee Ray or Xia Brookside and have them do a tag program with either team irrelevant or Emma & Summer ray and have a womens tag belt tournament or a queen of the ring PPV

WWE please don’t forget about the bae, Paige ? Lmao

  • josh

They need to let her be the Stone Cold of the womens division. Just let her come in and beat the crap out of someone and leave. Let her loose on the mic too. Oh how I love the Brit women when they talk.

    • Someguy

      ( ?° ?? ?°)?

I saw somewhere she tweeted to a fan or something, WWE just doesnt have anything for her. And it could be as simple as that. They have so much going on in the Women’s diviosn right now, Paige simply doesn’t fit right now. It is not like she isn’t important or forgotten as she gets a lot of attention on Total Divas, Tough Enough and other outside stuff. So I guess her time will come again, maybe it may take a couple years, but it will.

Patience Dorathy Patience. On a side note, I think Total Divas has kind of ruined Paige.

    • Joseph Lisnow

i agree about total divas hurting paige.

She is the reason I went back to wrestling on 2014.
I don’t think she’ll get much TV time this year, it’s all about the 3 new girls.
Hopefully she will have a better 2017.
