Dear WWE Creative … You May Have Ruined The 2016 Royal Rumble

WWE
Dear WWE Creative,

Post-Monday Night RAW, and I am not a happy camper. It seems, the stipulation of the Royal Rumble has changed this year, and I’m still trying to come to terms with it.

I love change, I do; but then there is something about feel-good tradtions that I look forward to: Like turkey and grandma’s biscuits on Thanksgiving, and watching a Christmas Story during the holidays. Much like those, having the winner of the Royal Rumble headline Wrestlemania and get a chance at the WWE World Heavyweight Championship was a feel-good tradtion for a wreslting fan like myself. It marks the official Road to Wrestlemania, which is really the best time of year for any WWE fan.

I get it WWE Creative, for the last couple of years, you have received some back lash around the event … so why not try something different? Last year, critics lashed out on how the Royal Rumble was booked, its winner, and even The Rock felt the boom of the audience’s booing as the match closed. In fact, fans weren’t too pleased with how the 2014 Royal Rumble match unfolded and ended. This may or may not be because fan darling Daniel Bryan did not win the Rumble (despite the fact that many wanted this to happen), or it may be because the two matches themselves lacked the luster, excitement, and shock-value we fans have grown use to in the past. It’s a simple recipe really, but for one reason or another, you haven’t been nailing it. And so the hype continues to build, the pressure (especially with two epic fails under your belt) around the match, and some stress is sure to be there. What is a WWE Creative team to do … but change the game a little?

I think the WWE Universe genuinely looks forward to this time of year. We are on the cusp of the Road to Wrestlemania, the most exciting time of the year for a WWE fan. The Royal Rumble event, one of the Big Four WWE pay-per-views is one that rich in history; and history one of the reasons fans (both young and old) are so vested into your brand. Since 1993, it’s been a tradition, that the winner of the Royal Rumble match goes on to headline Wrestlemania, and gets a shot at the holy grail of gold within the company: the WWE World Heavyweight Championship.

So that is why I am skeptical about this year’s Royal Rumble. It also could be the fact that the past two years have not been the best in Royal Rumble history. But, placing the WWE title on the line, with the winner taking all? This is something that hasn’t been done at a Royal Rumble since Ric Flair won the match, and the title in 1992 … but the only difference is, the title was vacant at the time. If the winner of the Royal Rumble become WWE champ, where is the hype in program for the main event of Wrestlmeania?

Change can be good, if rolled out correctly. Despite the fact that fans love hopping on the internet, reading up on WWE gossip and rumour; we also love a good, solid, surprise. The past two Royal Rumbles have not provided that, and while we all think (my hand is certainly up) that Roman Reigns will probably emerge the winner of this year’s Rumble as WWE World Heavyweight Champion, really, that may not be the case.

The Royal Rumble game has been changed WWE Creative, and while there is that cynical side of me that thinks this may not be the best idea, the ‘glass is half full’ (forever optimist) side of me will go into the Rumble with hopes that this year, you all will nail it. Good luck WWE Creative, you may just need it.

this can be a good or bad thing, but all depends on creative. It can either go as having the Rumble being just another means to hype/build Reigns and having him come out on top (which most likely lead to backlash again from the fans). Or they can use this to build not one but a few stars.

One scenario I have is let Bray Wyatt win the gold. Continue the Wyatt family with how they are doing now, have them look dominant leading up to the Rumble to try and build Brays threat to winning.

During the Rumble itself, I would have Roman come out first or pretty early and have HHH screw him and get him elimanted. This now creates a lot of hype fast for the rest of the rumble, and also creates a wrestlemania match between the two which will be huge. HAve Vince in HHH’s corner, and the Rock in reigns corner, and its pure money.

Also, during the rumble have Lesnar/Owens screw each other, setting a match with them for Mania, another huge match. Heyman alone will sell this as the biggest match ever.

During the Rumble, I would have the last 2 be Bray and Finn Balor. Have the family screw Finn, Bray wins. Next night on Raw or wenver after, Finn confronts BRay, family beats him up. Out come to makes the save is the Bullet club once they sign em. There you have two matches, Bullet club/wyatt family and Finn vs Bray for the belt.

AND you still have the Divas, tag teams AND the Undertaker to fill the Mania card. New stars built, fresh fueds, with still a lot of star power.

Again as I said it all comes down to Creative.

You are right. And all great scenarios!

    • IMMAD JOHNSON #NewNation

Some good points but why would Reigns need Rock in his corner ? Or even Vince for that matter ? And you can scratch that Balor idea that’s doing too much and why go through all of that when you could just bring up Samoa Joe and AJ Styles ? Let Lesnar win the Rumble which sets up a fued with HHH ( helps Lesnar win) that would last until WM.

      WM Card :

      Reigns vs Lesnar
      Samoa Joe vs Owens
      AJ Styles vs Ziggler
      Taker vs Wyatt
      Charlotte vs Sasha
League of Nations vs New Day
      HHH vs The Rock*

*The Rock comes to defend Reigns during previous Reigns fued

      • Jonny

its just an idea no need to put it down. yours is a good idea as well, just as so many people have honestly for the situtation.

Either way it comes down to creative which most likely will use it as a means to overhype reigns, leading to the ineveitable backlash, and the haphzard booking/changed that will happen as a result.

        • IMMAD JOHNSON #NewNation

Not sure how I put your opinion down when I clearly stated you made valid points ? I only changed your Balor prediction and adding a different spin off of your original post but oh well

      • HollywoodJD

Why would u want to see reigns vs lesnar again? That match was awful last year, rollins saved it and so the crowd made it seem good…. Reigns should be in the mid card getting beat by hhh at mania, then we will see how much of a star he really is

        • Mike

That match was fantastic one of the best on the night. Most said it really went above and beyond expectation

          • IMMAD JOHNSON #NewNation

I refuse to let anyone and I mean ANYONE keep spewing that bs about Reigns having a great match against Lesnar what match were you watching ???? Reigns barely got 5 moves off the entire match and the announcers hailed Reigns as great due to the a** kicking he took while still smiling not because of the actual match

          • Mike

It was a brutal match, so hard hitting and physical. No one expected a wrestling clinic. However we got a great and entertaining fight.

          • IM MAD JOHNSON #NewNation

No way my friend we got an a** kicking and 3 Superman punches. Don’t get it confused

          • Fat Owens Fat

That’s because Lesnar was and still is booked like WCW’s Bill Goldberg for star power. He’s the only guy they have left to put young kids over. Remember, this is a show where Daniel Bryan defeats Kane. If they had to book Kane like the psychotic monster he used to be 10 years ago, Daniel Bryan would be tossing around the ring on Raw/SD every week. But that isn’t their intention or story telling.

          • IM MAD JOHNSON #NewNation

So please explain the intent because creative has dropped the ball multiple times over the last 3 years

          • Fat Owens Fat

Lesnar is the only active bankable star from the past. They want to milk his existence, however short that is going to be by making him be Goldberg who will ultimately pass the baton.

        • IMMAD JOHNSON #NewNation

I’m not a Reigns fan but you have to make him face a really strong opponent so that his title reign looks legit you really don’t want to keep using the same group of people HHH,Big Show, Vince, Steph and the Rock to help this guys character look any worse than it already does. Plus who else could fued with Brock at this time ? Well maybe Cesaro, but Vince is determined to bury his career

        • Fat Owens Fat

“Reigns should be in the mid card getting beat by hhh at mania” ahh the typical Indy smark mentality. Whines when the indy guys get buried by HHH, yet wants others to prove their mettle by being buried by old guys. Great logic there 😀

    • MikeLo #NewNation

I doubt Finn would be in the rumble

    • Mike

Kevin owens is not ready for a match with Lesnar at mania I don’t believe

      • Joseph Lisnow

        agreed. maybe in two years.

  • MikeLo #NewNation

This is the best Rumble in years

    • Dorathy

It just might be! I just hope no cheese ball ending. know what I mean?

  • MikeLo #NewNation

    Cesaro FTW

    • MikeLo #NewNation

He should at least win money in the bank this year

    • IMMAD JOHNSON #NewNation

      ??????????

  • HollywoodJD

Actually its been 3 epic fails in a row, with super thug winning the 2013 rumble also a collosal mistake, fans were not happy and remember how terribke rock vs super thug at wm29 was??? That was a snooze fest that got booed out of the building. Wwe will drop the ball again. Reigns will somehow headline mania again and beat brock clean because u know, gotta make him look strong! Even though he is awful and wwe, err vince or hhh, does not realize it. This wm will asbolutely suck, sell your tix while you can, get ready for part timers and basically maybe 1-2 great matches in the mid and lower card

    • Mike

John cena face of the wwe not super thug. Wm29 was the highest grossing my successful wrestlemania in history Becuase it was headlined by two of biggest stars wwe have ever had

  • Mike

I don’t agree this is a good thing. Weather reigns wins or not it’s a good thing. I for one would like to see Roman remain as wwe champ. It’s time for him to have a Proper reign as champ

    • Dorathy

Thanks for the comment Mike! I like Reigns as champ too, We shall see :)

  • Fat Owens Fat

“If the winner of the Royal Rumble become WWE champ, where is the hype in program for the main event of Wrestlmania?”
Umm that gives the road to WM a lot of unpredictability unlike the last couple of years when everyone’s only question was to wonder if the Rumble winner will pin the champ or not. Now its anybody’s game to headline Mania with whomsoever wins the title at the Rumble. That’s a lot of creative opportunity to bring in triple threat match at Mania for the title or a fatal 4 way even without having to go through loopholes in storylines to add extra players into the main event. I for one am glad that they chose to shake up the old Rumble winner to headline Mania bit atleast for one time after a long gap.

Wrestlemeania? Are you suggesting some BWO action?!!!!
