Dear WWE Creative: New Era, New Champion

WWE Champion
Dear WWE Creative,

You have been touting a new era in the WWE for weeks now; to solidify this statement, may I make a suggestion? If we are in fact in a new era, perhaps its time for a new WWE World Heavyweight Champion to usher this in?

The Styles Era has a nice ring to it? Perhaps the Era of Phenomenal? You can really use either.

Listen Creative, I’m a fan of Roman Reigns, I won’t hide behind that fact. I think his fans, no matter what storyline he is in, will stand behind him. The kid has even knocked three WHC reigns under his belt in the past year; something that no doubt, due to his age, his talent, and how high his bosses are on him, will continue to mount higher and higher. Should Naitch or Cena be worried? Maybe, but I digress … this story is about Styles … I’m not concerned about Roman at this time.

AJ Styles has been a huge asset to you since he burst on the scene in early 2016. I’ve said this before, he’s clearly a merchandising money-maker, and seems to be doing quite well in all demographics. He may not be what you consider a ‘face’ to lead the company, but as we have learnt in years past, leaders within the WWE come in different shapes and sizes. But more importantly, he’s a babyface, that gets pops; and as much as I do respect Reigns for his effort the past few months, and how he continues to press on – despite negative fan reaction – Reigns simply does not get pops … he gets boos. Lots of them. I get it, whether you running the WWE, working in Creative, or simply a superstar; you have to try different things to reach success. I’m not blasting Reigns or you for the way his character has unfolded, but something needs to be re-arranged, and re-done with Roman; and he may need a break as champ. Just champ. I don’t think he needs a break from television, storylines, or the road – just a break as champ. You’ve build him up, we get it; he’s awesome, and can defeat unsurmountable odds – but I think it is time to lay off of Reigns for a while, and re-set your focus.

Besides, there is just too much of a negative connotation with Reigns as champ; there are those that believe he does not deserve the push he is getting. That’s fair, and everyone is entitled to their opinion. However, I feel like the best way to rectify this negative is to either turn Reigns heel (which doesn’t seem to be the direction Creative is going); or perhaps give him a few months without the championship. I’d personally allow Wrestlemania 33 season to pass before giving him that opportunity again as the Royal Rumble and Road To Wrestlemania seem stir about these said negative feelings when it comes to Reigns. But that’s just me.

And I’m not suggesting Styles become WWE Champion at Extreme Rules simply because Roman is not over (the way you want him to be, or the way he should be). Styles is a strong competitor, with a proven past track record when it comes to this industry, and he has stepped up to the plate and knocked it out of the park consecutively during WWE pay-per-views (PPV) that he has been booked in since his arrival. He’s connected with fans from across all demographics, and is entertaining in that ring. He’s already created a phenomenal (pun-intended) pro wrestling career outside the WWE, and has had a powerful impact in the short six months since he’s arrived in the organization.

Moreover, this is a new era for the company; and really to me, a new champ could speak volumes to this point. The new era walks that perfectly fine line of PG-related programming, with a certain edge to it; and it is also dominated with the idea that fresh, new talent are taking over. The Styles character embodies all these ideas. He’s new to the WWE. He’s not hard on the eyes, yet not a pretty boy. He’s solid in ring, and provides highflying for entertainment. His character is certainly not main stream, but at the same time it doesn’t fall past any skewed lines that may or could be deemed inappropriate. He seems like the perfect candidate to help really push the new era over; with the fans, and pro wrestling journalists alike.

Do you want this moment in time to create a true legacy within the WWE? Do you want this era to be thought of in years to follow as something truly great? Then follow the branding you, yourselves have concocted, and take that plunge. Prove to the WWE Universe that this is indeed a new era in sports entertainment history, by crowning a new WWE World Heavyweight Champion.

At the end of the day, you will do, what you will do; and I personally will be fine with Roman Reigns retaining at Extreme Rules – as long as there is a method to your madness (storyline wise), and I’m entertained. Still Creative, giving Styles the championship will be pivotal to your commitment to branding this new era – as he has been one of the key players to build a foundation around this time and place within the WWE. Making this big move, which really is not that big, will only help solidify the idea within the minds of your audience, the WWE Universe.

Good article. But I would be blown away if WWE takes the strap off Reigns at ER. I see earliest Summerslam, most likely further down the road then that

If Roman wins I am cancelling my WWE Networking subscription. I dont appreciate jobbing out Styles and the bullet club members for a shitty champion which by Vince’s standard has no right to be in the main event. He said in an interview if a wrestler cannot get a crowd behind him than that wrestler has no right to a push.

I’m a little late catching up on all of the articles, but Dorathy, do you think Rollins will come back as a good or bad guy? Personally, I would love to see a good guy vs good guy Seth Rollins vs Sami Zayn. What do you think of it?

    • Dorathy

Love it! I think Rollins will return face

  • ‘Drowen Hart #NN #NBNC ?????

Roman has fans? Just joking or maybe I’m not ????

I don’t think this storyline hasn’t been that beneficial to AJ and to a certain extent Gallows and Anderson. AJ will win the title one day, I just don’t think it will happen this Sunday. As for Roman, you can’t drop the title that fast again if you’re creative. I see him holding on to the title until Summerslam against a returning Seth Rollins.

The fact Roman Reign is the worst performer in wwe. The guy sucks and can’t wrestle in the ring, neither he can talk on mic. He simply doesn’t have what it takes to be a face of wwe. WWE is pushing a wrong guy who Doesn’t deserve a bit. In extreme rule AJ style should be a new WHC and Nathalya should be a new Women Champion, only then I can consider my self wwe indeed heading to a new era.
