Dear WWE Creative … Total Divas Is Ruining Women’s Wrestling

WWE
Dear WWE Creative,

Here we are, another week gone by, and another letter where I am complaining about how you handle the divas division. The January 18th edition of Monday Night RAW made a complete mockery of women’s wrestling, and once again had me wondering what was the point of the divas revolution in the summer.

I’m referring to the divas match that pitted a returning Nattie against Brie Bella, which was completely and entirely just a plug for the new season of Total Divas; airing on the E! Network, on Tuesdays at 9 p.m. EST … there, I plugged it for you … does that mean we can see something better around these female talents moving forward?

Paige accompanied Natalya, which was great see. I’ve missed both divas on television. Still, lines were blurred with the divas once again as it related to faces and heels. Before Paige’s absence on television, prior to the minor concussion she suffered, she was a heel – in fact, before Nattie disappeared from television, they were sort of in a program together at opposite ends of the storyline. Still, on Monday Night RAW, there they were, best buds – with no explanation. I guess none is needed when it comes to the divas, especially when a match is put together (not to enhance a character, build up a storyline) solely to simply plug a reality television show. To boot, Team Bella (minus Nikki), were all of a sudden heels, when just last week, they worked as faces. We don’t see this same concept transferring into storylines when it relates to males on the roster? In fact, I can’t remember the last time (if at all) where a male competitor was heel one RAW episode, and then face the next week (or vice-versa), with no explanation at all.

Not to mention the fact that the match was just over a minute: it actually seemed to be over, even before it began. And if you don’t believe me, because I have been going on and on about the divas for weeks, if not months – maybe you should read some comments on social media?

It’s almost been a year since #GiveDivasAChance trended worldwide, and things are right back to where they were in the women’s division: no real heels or faces, no programs, and no evolution of the female characters. The Charlotte/Lynch story seems to be moving well, but you also had to stick Ric Flair in the mix of this program (or so you thought you had to).

I get it, it can’t be easy having to plug a show that the higher ups are … well … high up on. You needed to include some key players in a match, bring them all together, in order to plug the show on RAW. Great move on adding Paige and Natalya, seriously, but they deserve a bit of a storyline along with a return. I mean, surely WWE Creative, it could’ve been done with some thought behind it. Because all four women involved in the segment (especially Nattie and Brie) deserved oh-so much more. More time for the match, and perhaps a backstage promo to give some reasoning behind why Paige is now face and accompanying Nattie? Something a little more concrete.

Still, fast forward one week, and the January 25th edition has Paige (returning to action after a significant absence) tagging with Nattie against Brie and Foxy; and the match once again may have broken the minute mark. No backstage promos, not much wrestling time; just a plug for Total Divas.

So, is hyping up a television show, more important than promoting your female talent that will ensure them some success as it relates to what they are paid to do: perform in the ring? And I do get it Creative, it’s that fine line of wanting the WWE brand to once again experience main stream media success (which is helped by Total Divas), yet staying true to your female talent, and the brand that your loyal fans base finds appealing. I really do feel there is a way to do both. Once again, more thought needs to be put into it. More than just assembling four women (from Total Divas), and throwing them together match. Besides, if Total Divas is such a huge investment, that deserves hyping up; wouldn’t it be far more effective to put together a match that is more than two minutes long? Perhaps create somewhat of a storyline between these four women? Do what you do with the men: create a storyline between two divas who might have a problem with each other? Something that is entertaining and compelling. Don’t lose sight of this simple recipe of success; it works when it comes to entertaining pro wrestling fans, and it can work to hype up your reality show too.

Dear WWE Creative, don’t have your fan base questioning on whether or not they should continue watching Total Divas, through the weak and nonsensical divas matches you put together on RAW. The women deserve better, and so do your fans.

Hey now…Big Show turns all the time.

    • siddus

      The point is valid, none-the-less.

    • Dorathy

True. But when show turns, at least he gets a bit of a promo to explain it. The girls are sent out there in matches, where fans have to guess who’s the face and who’s the heel.

    • MEH

Was about to say the same

  • siddus

As you point out, the main issue is that between promoting Total Divas, and putting on divas matches that are compelling and have a storyline to them, one need not preclude the other, and in fact each could enhance the other done right.
The best storylines are always the ones that blur the lines between kayfabe and reality. Given that total divas is just as scripted (if not more) as any “reality” show, then Total Divas could act as the equivalent of backstage segments for the Divas in a dedicated show. But that doesn’t work if the matches on RAW bear no relationship to the what is going on in Total Divas.
Also, you would have much more of a selling point for Total Divas if you gave them good matches to put on. Right now, a casual Total Divas viewer would get the impression that these women are only capable of going at it for 2 minutes at a time. Would it not be a much better selling point to show the “reality” behind women capable of putting on matches of the calibre NXT were showcasing regularly, and we have seen glimpses of since the supposedly Divas Revolution? Why should Total Divas attract any casual fans to the main product if the tie-in matches are so poor? For the same reason why should any fans of the main product be attracted back to Total Divas? And why should the main product attract any fans to Total Divas if there’s no apparent reason or logic behind the booking of the match that ties back into the show.

  • Lisa

WWE’s booking of its female talent is terrible. It’s laughable that in this day and age female wrestlers are portayed like afterthoughs – beautiful women that are employed for the sole purpose of amusing and catering to the needs of male wrestlers in the locker room.
I have been approached by a WWE agent before and I can guarantee you that I would never work for Vince McMahon and Co.

    • PlanoStu

      Lol, meds must be awesome

      • Lisa

        Are you jealous?

        • PlanoStu

Of the kind of meds you must be ingesting to believe someone in WWE contacted you? Hell yes I’m jealous. I’ve only got Percoset, and that does not cause those types of delusions.

          • Lisa

The fact that WWE offered me a contract means a lot to me considering that I’m a life-long wrestling fan.
Whether you believe it or not I certainly won’t lose any sleep over it.

          • MEH

I actually believe you as I have first hand witnessed girls who haven’t stepped in the ring or had any interest in wrestling been given a try out and given a contract based on their looks and not experience.

          • Lisa

The irony is that I’m such a huge wrestling fan. I’ve just never dreamed of becoming a wrestler. Besides, I wouldn’t want to be slated by the IWC for being “eye candy that can’t wrestle.”

          • siddus

You don’t meet the requirements. You need to be eye candy first

          • Lisa

WWE wouldn’t have wanted to sign me if I wasn’t.

          • biz

Wwe didn’t want to sign you. Everything you say makes zero sense. If you’re the biggest fan in the world of wrestling, you’d have at least a hint of desire to be a wrestler yourself. Stop typing when you’re smoking crack.

          • Lisa

You are on crack. Watching wrestling and being a wrestler are very different. I’ve been watching wrestling since I was an infant and I’m a huge fan.
            I’ll always be.
But the prospect of being a WWE diva just doesn’t interest me. Female talent always play second fiddle to their male counterparts. Why would I want to be an afterthought?
I used to be a fan of Trish Stratus’ back in the day but I feel somewhere along the way things took the wrong turn and women’s wrestling has just never been the same.
That’s why I said no to WWE and if I were approached again (I think there’s a very good chance of that happening) I’ll still say NO.

          • biz

They asked me if I wanted to be John Cena. I said no so they found someone else.

          • Lisa

You’re possibly the stupidiest person I’ve ever interacted with.

          • biz

            thank you!

          • MEH

Doesn’t matter what anyone says unless it provides food on your table!

          • Lisa

            You’re right about that.

          • PlanoStu

            Lol, meds again

          • Lisa

Just crawl back into the cave you emerged from, old man.

          • PlanoStu

All replies only a kid would make, definitely not an adult. Quite funny though

          • Lisa

            Just shut the f___ up.

          • PlanoStu

Never. I will always outlast you biatch

          • Lisa

Now go play with your 10 grand children.

          • PlanoStu

Lol, sorry to disappoint you. No grandkids yet. But I guarantee all 4 of my beautiful sons will succeed much further than you. My oldest (for example) just got accepted into Duke, MIT, Stanford, Georgia Tech, and John Hopkins for Grad School, full ride, Biomedical Engineering. Top that Skank

          • Lisa

I guess you think I’m poor. Well, not many people my age make as much money as I do.

          • PlanoStu

Lol, considering you’re 15, that might not be too difficult. At 50, I make more than most people I know. Wanna compare bank accounts?

          • Lisa

How much do you make in a month?

          • PlanoStu

Not that’s it’s your business, or that anyone here needs to know, and more importantly, whatever I say, you’ll claim more but if you need to know, roughly $28k/month

          • Lisa

That’s not bad. I won’t tell you how much I make though. Pretty sure you wouldn’t believe me.

          • Joseph Lisnow

just enough to buy the WWE Network at the end of the month.

          • PlanoStu

Lots of comments, never proof. Hey did you know that I was at a WWE event in Dallas a few months ago, and Paige blew me while I fisted Charlotte. Then I told Michael Hayes that I’ve been watching since 1974 and showed him my 32″ pythons, while Pat Patterson grabbed my 14″ cockle doodle do. Next thing ya know, they want me to be ring announcer. I said thanks, but I’ll wait til Vince calls. True story!

          • Lisa

Tell that to your grandma. Now get the hell outta here, you senior citizen.

          • PlanoStu

Hahahahaha. Cmon over and let me spank that wrinkly ass. Clearly I hit a truth nerve. Either that or you just proved you just a kid, probably 12 or 13, based on your maturity level. It’s ok, daddy forgives you

          • Lisa

I would never get spanked by an old man.

    • siddus

I will always kind of admire the lengths to which you’ll stretch credibility in your trolling. Like it’s so completely unlikely that it must be true because no-one would go so far if they were lying. Except your troll colours are so well known. And when I say admire, I mean admire in a “I still hate your guts” kind of way.

      • Lisa

Whether you believe it or not, it won’t change facts. WWE was interested in me because I fit their “diva” image despite having no wrestling experience. Had I accepted the offer, idiots like you would probably be mocking and hating on me in the same manner that internet marks hate on Eva Marie.

        • siddus

Haven’t you noticed? We already hate you and mock you for your blatant trolling.

          • Lisa

It’s you who is a troll.

    • biz

if you’re a wrestling fan and turned down working for wwe, you’re an idiot.

      • Lisa

I’m probably the biggest wrestling fan on earth but I have never wanted to be a wrestler. Besides, I don’t like how the company treats its female talent. That’s why I said no and even if they were to approach me again I would still say no.

      • Mean Dean

She was suppose to be part of the HoTrain this year at mania

    • The Shockmaster

What would you choose as your ring name?

      • Lisa

I would use my real name.

        • The Shockmaster

          So would I

          • Lisa

The Shockmaster would be a good ringname.

          • The Shockmaster

I wonder if it’s taken xD

  • Si Nicholls

If they tied in Total Diva’s too RAW it would take talented writers for one, as TD seems to be filmed about 6 months before air date

  • MEH

This is WWE and as per HHH and the authority’s promo on this past Raw, we don’t matter and they can do as they like. If a storyline needs to be dropped we must erase it from our memory banks in order for what they are serving us make any form of sense. There have been instances where I have cringed watching the product. Paige and Nikki Bella at the slammys breaking kayfabe being best buddies after feuding for months over the title. Although we all know it’s a work, jeez give me some credibility when watching the show as you just told me I’ve been wasting my time following your program for the last year. Kinda like Rocky (Stallone) going up and hugging Appolo Creed it just BS!
And oh I’m still waiting for little Johnny, may have to ask Maggle about that one.

    • Dorathy

I thought Nicki’s acceptance speech at the Slammys was a bit of a dig to AJ Lee’s acceptance last year. Because AJ kind of diss the total divas cast where is Nicki was trying to add everyone to speech by keeping PAige around. Does that make sense?

      • MEH

I didn’t even think of that you may be right.

  • jcice13

total divas is ruining tv as we know it, the show is crap, the performances are amateurish at best and the storylines are so stupid it hurts one’s eyes and ears..they want you to believe crap like dolph hitting on nikki IN FRONT of a camera and that Cena would never see it???? how stupid is that? don’t they air the show? won’t Cena be able to view it??? as Siddus says below, if they want to make this compelling they should enhance the in ring product with the “reality” one..if you keep things moving and flowing as one then you might have something there but to do this nonsense just makes it stupid..

  • Ashley Lancaster

That crap should have been cancelled ages ago.
I do not agree with anyone that says it is good for the women, it is that crap that is holding back WWE having a legitimate women’s division.
The Bellas and their total divas strangle hold took the division to new levels of low over the past few years.
When you had months on end of Bellas vs Rosa, Eva Marie and Cameron etc it just makes you feel so bad for the legit women of the business past and present.
WWE will never get women’s wrestling off the ground again until the Bellas and Total Divas are gone. It will run its course but hopefully sooner rather than later.
It isn’t even real everything on Total Divas is fake, every single storyline is made up so what makes anyone want to watch that drivel bewilders me. #CancelTotalDivas
