Monday Night RAW Needs Mauro Ranallo

WWE Network
The WWE Universe is witnessing a transition into a ‘new era’, filled with new talent, new leadership (storyline-wise), and a new attitude … so how about a new Monday Night RAW announce team?

I’m not completely suggesting to switch it up entirely, but perhaps replacing one announcer, say Bryan Saxton … for someone who has completely made a splash in terms of WWE announcing, since arriving officially on the scene in January 2016: Mauro Ranallo.

As fans, we know the value the announce team brings to WWE programming, and their overall product. They play an integral piece in a puzzle to help push a talent, sell a superstar and their gimmick, and make a match seem more exciting than it is (well that need arises). I’m probably not the only fan who seems to be getting bored with the trio who currently call RAW and pay-per-view (PPV) events; nothing against these individuals, but there seems to be a lack of chemistry, and the team overall is getting stale. I understand that some of us miss and long for the days of good ol’ J.R. and the King; but everything that is good must come to an end, and there is not need to replay or recycle what did work.

However, change can often bring about new ways of greatness.

I also understand that Michael Cole, JBL, and Saxton are under differing degrees of pressure, that J.R. and Lawler may not have had to endure during their tenure; social media, and real-time fan feedback that can affect the way the rest of a RAW or PPV pans out, is a major one that sticks out in mind.

Having said that, Mauro Ranallo’s announcing really does remind me a lot J.R. and his announcing style, and I know I’m not the only one to make this kind of comparison. His dramatics, his expressions, and just his voice in general, is refreshing. He also has an authenticity to himself; because let’s face it, the announcers play a character just like all the other superstars within the roster do. It’s hard to say for sure whether Ranallo’s onscreen commentator character mimics or shadows who he really is; but he has an air of confidence and genuineness while he’s calling matches. He is still able to help promote the WWE, its superstars, and key messages about the brand that may be a strategic priority (i.e. WWE Networks subscriptions, or company initiative), without it sounding forced, water-down, or just plain insincere.

I truly think Ranallo would make an excellent edition to the RAW team. I suggest replacing Saxton, but I really think he’d probably be better suited for Cole’s role: as the quasi-ring leader of the team. However, I do understand these things take time. I’m sure the higher ups not only consider fan reaction, but other, many different factors surely come into play. Is Ranallo remaining on brand when it comes to WWE messaging? That surely is something Cole is good at, though at times, his commentary come off forced and inorganic.

Regardless, I’d love to Mauro Ranallo end up on RAW, sooner than later. To truly reflect this  ‘new era’ in the WWE, all aspects need to be stirred up a bit, and commentary is no exception to this rule. #RAWNeedsRanallo

The problem with the RAW announcing team is that they talk so much that they end up ignoring (ie, not calling) the match in the ring. That hurts the product. Slim down to a two man team. Put someone other than a retired “Legend” with Cole. Then put Corey Graves with Ranallo on Smackdown.

  • Billy Clark

He’s the worst ring announcer ever. His voice is absolutely horrendous. I’d rather have Mike adamle out there saying his god awful Jamaican me crazy line and other nonsense that spewed from his mouth

      …………………….

    • Lisa

      He’s not a ring announcer.

      • Billy Clark

Yes he is…. You can call him a commentator if you’d like but still considered a ring announcer

        • Lisa

Wrestling commentators are often referred to as announcers – not “ring anouncers”. Lilian Garcia (for instance) is a ring announcer.

I’ll give you props for finally sayin somethin of substance and being correct..without pandering to Cena-Nuff and Roman Reigning Boos

          • Lisa

I’ll give you props for finally not rushing to bash me as you always do.

I like Mauro, but I believe Cole gets a bad rap. He has had to follow probably the greatest announcer ever, and that’s difficult, sure he is no jr. But he is a good announcer. I personally think they should bring Corey graves on smackdown and have him replace Byron. So Byron isn’t over exposed on both shows.

    • Mikey Shango #DunDunDuuunnnnnn

Or could just fire Byron problem solved

      • Mike

I think he is ok. He is articulate, he knows his stuff. Can’t see the issue with him.

        • jcice13

he never really says much of anything..so no matter how intelligent he might sound or be what good is it if he rarely brings anything to the table that’s more than 5 word sentences or some cheerleader remark

    Right on dorathy!!! #maruoisbestforbusiness

  • Mikey Shango #DunDunDuuunnnnnn

    #ReplaceByron

I agree with removing Byron. But Ranallo? No, Raw doesn’t need him at all. His voice is annoying and one of the reasons I don’t enjoy SmackDown matches anymore. Just let JBL and Cole do their thing. They are not the best team but at least we got used to them over the years.

    • jcice13

people get used to a lot of bad things in their lives that doesn’t mean you want to go through it.Cole and JBL are not only mediocre, they’ve run their course.I mean come on when was the last time JBL made a reference that was from this century????

      • Red

Traveling to different centuries through JBL’s commentary isn’t that bad.

        • jcice13

it is when the reference is lost to 95% of the audience..unfortunately I am old enough to know all of them he’s made whether it’s wrestling or any other facet of life but that’s because I lived through those years..I can give you an example.I play golf with a guy who’s 50 y/o one day he banged his shoe to get dirt out of his cleats and I said “who do you think you are Nikita Kruschev?” he had no idea who I was referring to and that Kruschev banged his shoe on a table at the UN saying we will bury you…that’s the type of thing I meant

honestly cole is 50/50. I would replace JBL with Graves, and Saxton with Mauro. Have Mauro now be the anchor like how Cole is now, and drop Cole to where Saxton is now. Now that is the best WWE can get now. Heel King over JBl is good too, but since this is the “new Era”, Graves gets it.

    • jcice13

then who does smack down???? you have to send Cole there because 2 guys doing the same thing steps on each other

  • ‘Drowen Hart #NN #NBNC ?????

WNZ needs more Dorathy Gass articles!

    • Joseph Lisnow

      great addition to WNZ

  • jcice13

LOL I just commented on your new era column before reading this and I said the same thing.send Cole packing and bring this guy on board if for no other reason a new voice makes things feel fresh also the fact he’s much better than Cole..but no matter how good he is he still needs a great color man next to him and my question to the group is.who should that guy be?
