NXT In A Nutshell: Welcome Back, Neville

WWE Network
Ladies and gentlemen, it’s our first NXT of March. Spring is getting nearer, and the action is heating up inside that NXT ring. Tonight’s main event is a special bout, as The Man Gravity Forgot, Neville, returns to NXT to challenge Finn Balor.

Best Match of the night:

Balor and Neville. I will gush about them a lot in this Nutshell, and for good reason. Every week, it seems, I see a new “best match on NXT”, and tonight was no different.

Worst match of the night:

Really hard to give this to any match tonight, but of the ones we did get? Cutler and Samson would end up my least favorite. Emma and Santana would be next.

But, admittedly, I did not dislike any of the matches, so this one becomes un-awarded.

Crowd Chants of the Night:

Santana

This is awesome

Star of the Night

Balor and Neville. Mostly Balor, since he won the day.

Fans, I ask you this: both men are not physically imposing-no one would ever confuse them for Hunter, Roman, Brock and that ilk. But can you not imagine these two, at some point in the not too distant future, working the main event of a major WWE PPV? It would be quite nice, I think.

Spot of the Night:

Corbin’s assault of Aries, especially hitting End of Days on the outside.

Several moves during Balor/Neville. Not the least of which was what sent Neville over the top rope, to the outside, appearing to make contact with the steps on the way down. Nicely done move. Neville’s German suplex, quickly done after running the ropes? That was just nifty.

The Hurricanrana from the top? Sick. Just sick.

Jobber of the Night:

Hugo Knox and Tucker Knight. Opening bout, and they got put away by the former NXT champions? It was a formulaic way for a jobber’s night to go, so it’s only fair that they get the nod. Steve Cutler was a close second, for what it’s worth.

Upset of the Night:

None. With only four matches on the show, getting an upset tonight was long odds to say the least.

Holy Sh** Moment of the Night:

Austin Aries joining the ranks of former TNA standouts making the move to NXT/WWE.

But then, before ever getting into an NXT ring on TV, he gets destroyed by Baron Corbin.

Botch of the night:

Maybe not a botch in the classic sense, but Cutler bleeding during the match with Elias Samson-I have to imagine that was not in the script, as WWE has of course long been shying away from the crimson. Having allowed it on RAW just recently to further the Reigns/Hunter story, I doubt very much that they’d be cool with it being used in NXT, in what amounts to a jobber match.

Commentary of the night:

Maybe there were some good lines tonight, but I didn’t catch any.I actually was preoccupied with the matches, which isn’t a bad thing. Honesty, in a perfect world, I’d rather not have time or the ability to hone in on one liners and quips because the in-ring action is just that good. So for tonight, if you heard any you wish to call out? Add it to the comments!

LOL Moment of the night:

This time around? No LOL worthy moments. It happens.

If you really wanted to laugh, perhaps how Regal handled Eva Marie and Nia Jax, and the looks on their faces as he left them backstage. But that’s a reach.

Noteworthy Moment:

Hmm. Let’s see.

Austin Aries debuting.

Neville returning to have an excellent match with champion Finn Balor.

And, the announcement of a best 2 of 3 falls match between Samoa Joe and Sami Zayn, coming to us next week in an effort to finally clear up the number one contender’s spot.

Also, we will get an NXT tag team championship match on the WWE Network special event on March 12, as The Revival puts the straps on the line against Enzo and Big Cass.

Overall lowlights:

Not a whole lot tonight. Which for an hour-long show, should be a goal. Mission accomplished this week.

Overall highlights:

Austin Aries. Including the attack by Corbin.

Neville versus Balor. This one gets like, a thousand mentions. It was a pretty good match. Really good.

The overall show, start to finish, was strong. Much better hour from NXT as compared to the three hours of RAW.

After the final bell:

Once again, another strong hour out of NXT. Seeing Neville work against Balor was a treat, and one can’t help but get excited for what could be possible between these two on the main roster.

I would have liked another match, in all honesty-maybe another tag match, or perhaps another ladies match, as both divisions have been putting forth excellent matches of late. But really, that’s such a tiny gripe in the grand scheme.

The next month of matches ought to be pretty exciting, as we will learn next week who will be next challenging for the NXT championship, among other key matches.

Results:

Vaudevillains over Knox and Knight

Emma defeats Santana Garrett

Elias Samson beats Steve Cutler

Balor over Neville
