NXT In A Nutshell : He’s An Eleven

It’s time once again for another hour of NXT. The show opens with William Regal running down what we can expect this evening, including the Vaudevillains, Bayley and Shinsuke Nakamura. It’s going to be nice getting back into a regular NXT show, a week after we had the TakeOver recap. So let’s get right into things, as we head to the ring for Austin Aries kicking things off against

Best Match of the night:

Giving this one to Shinsuke versus Tye, on the strength of Shinsuke. I want to see more of this guy, and I want to see more of him in showcase matches like he had with Zayn.

Honorable mention will go to Ciampa and Gargano over The Vaudevillains

Worst match of the night:

Corbin versus Knight. On the upside, this one was over quick.

Crowd Chants of the Night:

Austin Aries

Let’s go Tessa

Johnny Wrestling

Bayley’s gonna hug you

Let’s go Bayley

He’s eleven

This is awesome

Star of the Night:

Shinsuke Nakamura. Did not take long for him to be adored by the fans, did it?

Also have to give a nod to Bayley, specifically for her post-match speech. She’s very fun to watch.

Spot of the Night:

I really like that spot for Gargano, rolling out of the corner and nailing Aiden English with the kick from the sitting position.

And then there’s the Kinsasha. It’s not my favorite running knee I’ve ever seen (Daniel Bryan gets that one) but it is pretty fierce looking all the same.

Jobber of the Night:

Tucker Knight gets the nod. Extra credit, first for that awful vest, and second, for taking End of Days. That can’t be an easy move to sell.

Liv Morgan gets a nod here too.

Upset of the Night:

Ciampa and Gargano over The Vaudevillains. I am aware that they tagged before, though it was before I started watching NXT. That being said, it’s a team that hasn’t teamed up on NXT TV in a long time, and here they defeated The Vaudevillains, a team just having debuted on the main roster, and taking part in the tag team tournament. Big upset.

Holy Sh** Moment of the Night:

I could say it was shocking to see Enzo talk, not scream or be a wise guy. But otherwise, their was no such qualifying moment of the week. It happens, what are you going to do?

Botch of the night:

If there was one, I did not see it.

Commentary of the night:

You’ll have to forgive his atrocious sense of fashion

I guarantee she didn’t learn that in Jersey…

I dunno, Jersey’s a pretty weird place.

You don’t want to mock the King of Strongstyle

How do you say “come at me bro” in Japanese

LOL Moment of the night:

After Dillinger says he’s a 10, in response to the crowd chants, that same crowd points to Shinsuke and says “he’s eleven”.

Noteworthy Moment:

Tessa Blanchard was in action, she being the daughter of Tully

We finally meet No Way Jose on NXT television, next week.

Enzo and Big Cass….VERY QUIET!!…challenging American Alpha. Should be a great match.

Overall lowlights:

I don’t know if this is really a lowlight, per se, but it was a rather average NXT show tonight. That’s not a real knock against it, however. I think it’s indicative of the high standards we’ve become accustomed to.

Overall highlights:

There were quite a few. Several matches were very good, if short. Bayley got back on the horse. Ciampa and Gargano, back together again and knocking off a team in the hunt for the WWE Tag Team Championship.

We got to see the daughter of Tully Blanchard in action, though she did lose.

And we have a couple much bigger matches lined up for next week-Enzo and Cass challenging American Alpha, and then Samoa Joe going head to head against Apollo Crews. So, next week should be good.

I think Finn’s little interview backstage is setting the table for an eventual championship match with Shinsuke. And as epic as Zayn/Nakamura was, I have a crazy hunch that Nakamura/Balor could be even better.

After the final bell:

Nice to get back to a “regular” NXT show, and next week looks to really start swinging for the fences again. Tonight was all about resetting things, since last week was all about recapping TakeOver. The crowd was as into it as ever, but you could tell they were filming in an odd location/setup, as they tried hard to avoid certain shots. But it was still a good show, but very much looking forward to having them back at Full Sail.

Also, while it’s not something I just noticed, I got a kick out of the commentary-this was clearly taped over WrestleMania weekend, but Tom and Cory are impressively good at what they do. I know they are reading off a page, or having things fed to them, but it just stood out tonight for me.

The best part of “How do you say come at me bro in Japanese?” Was the answer “Nakamura”

One of the worst crowds ever for a WWE event, and probably THE worst for an NXT event.

I know I’m being very picky here – but consistency issues annoy me a little. Graves has a go at the announcer for not mentioning Corbin winning the Battle Royal at WrestleMania – but at the top of the show it clearly stated it was being held at WrestleMania Axxess, which happened before WrestleMania itself.

Again, I’m being very picky but… yeah.
