NXT In A Nutshell: Jax Spoils Bayley’s Homecoming

Another Wednesday, another NXT show, and fans let me tell you, after the day I had, I cannot wait for an enjoyable hour of NXT talents showing off. So without too much more chit chat, let’s get right into the action, recorded at Full Sail University!

Best Match of the night:

There were a couple entertaining matches, but none without it’s flaws. I liked Nakamura pairing with Aries, but the match itself was really short.

I liked Jax and Bayley at times, but it was surprising to see Bayley do the job, and I felt Jax could have had a better showing than she did.

So….instead of these two? I am going to go nuts, and I give it to Gargano and Ciampa. Very strong showing tonight.

Worst match of the night:

Considering that I just discussed the other three matches, that means Carmella gets in here, right? Not so fast. As with many NXT shows, there wasn’t a stinker. Tonight is similar. It lacked an amazingly great match, but it also lacked a stinker. So no, tonight there won’t be a worst match of the night.

Star of the Night

I don’t want to, but I give it to Nia Jax for her win in the main event. Clearly being set up to be a big challenger for Asuka to slay, a la Earthquake and Hulk Hogan. It makes sense, it’s a tried and true way to book things. And, Jax plays the heel role well, so it all worked out.

Spot of the Night:

I do like Carmella’s variation of the triangle choke.

Also loved the double teaming by Gargano and Ciampa, especially the corner move.

Bayley, off the apron with a Hurricanrana onto the floor. Impressive.

Jobber of the Night:

Blake and Murphy sure fit this bill tonight. I can’t recall any notable offense that either got in, the match was short, they lost, and the team disintegrated.

Upset of the Night:

Kinda have to go with Nia Jax defeating Bayley, and pretty handily at that. It was, after all, kind of Bayley’s homecoming. Not really her homecoming, but the announcers treated it as much because of how fans respond to her at Full Sail.

Holy Sh** Moment of the Night:

Austin Aries, going for a surprise tag team partner of…Shinsuke Nakamura! Of course, the even bigger news was the teased future clash between Nakamura and Aries, which could absolutely be one of the best of the year.

Botch of the night:

Not a botch, per se, but noticed a few of the spots and bumps taken by Nia just didn’t look all that terrific. Specifically, the sequence where Bayley drop-kicked her knee and then to the chest/face, I presume she didn’t do a back bump as part of how things were written, but the bump she did do just looked awkward.

Commentary of the night:

Greatest man that ever lived almost had the shortest match that ever happened.

When Bayley hits the ring at Full Sail, she’s like the home team

LOL Moment of the night:

None to speak of tonight. It happens.

Noteworthy Moment:

After being squashed, Blake, Murphy and Alexa Bliss sure seem to go their separate ways, with Bliss walking away from both, and Blake walking away from Murphy.

Joe versus Finn Balor at the next NXT TakeOver is now going to be in a cage. Things get more and more interesting.

Fans teased Rob Ryzin with a Terra Ryzin chant.

Overall lowlights:

Disappointed that we didn’t have one mind-blowing great match on tonight’s show, but I think this one was more about laying the groundwork for the next few weeks, pre-TakeOver. Which, while we don’t always like seeing it, is a needed part of life.

Overall highlights:

Nakamura and Aries. Looked like some friendly jawing at times, but seriously, how awesome would it be to find out we could possibly get a long term feud between these two? Sign me up.

After the final bell:

Tonight was all about setting up TakeOver. We have a new stipulation added to the NXT championship in the form of a cage. We are getting American Alpha defending against the former champs. And I’d say a few other matches at least had groundwork laid for them on this show.

Not the strongest show overall. In fact, kind of a downer compared to what I’ve gotten used to.

I did, however, like the shout-out by Carmella to Enzo. Regal congratulating his recent former NXT teams was nice too. And the Asuka highlight package was nice, espcially liked the music accompanying it, by Halestorm. So it wasn’t really bad. Just would have liked a bit more action, less chatter.
