SmackDown In A Nutshell: Club Comes Out On Top

v
And the countdown to live Tuesday SmackDown continues to tick away, but while we wait for that July date, we get to enjoy a still solid, if taped, show. And tonight we open with a big confrontation with New Day in the ring and The Club on the stage. It’s going to be a good one tonight.

Best Match of the night:

I am inclined to give this one to Zayn and Ambrose versus Owens and Del Rio. Was very entertained for this one, and ultimately, we got to see more than just the four that were booked for the match, too. As we approach Money in the Bank, that’s the name of the game-set up the card at all costs.

Worst match of the night:

Golden Truth versus The Dudleys. I don’t know why they are expending valuable time to acts like Golden Truth and Breezedango, but we did get one of the teams in a match, while the other team got involved in it. Just wasn’t anything entertaining, to me, about it.

Crowd Chants of the Night:

New Day rocks

Becky

Golden Truth

We the people

USA

Star of the Night

Decisions decisions. I was inclined to go with the MITB participants for their tag match, but I changed my mind. Nope, for this spot, I am going with The Club. I wasn’t sure if AJ was going to really go all out heel, but he has and did and it works, or at least it worked tonight.

Spot of the Night:

Really can’t say that anyone stood out tonight. Sometimes it happens, and tonight was one of those nights.

Jobber of the Night:

The Golden Truth. This match was just uninspired, and while it earned “worst of the night”, it also is capable enough to get R-Truth and Goldust the nod as tonight’s pair of jobbers.

Upset of the Night:

None to speak of.

Holy Sh** Moment of the Night:

OK, this one isn’t really a Holy S moment, but it’s as close as I have tonight for it. Two parter, just because I am feeling generous.

1-We have a Jack Swagger sighting. Seriously, I can’t remember the last time I saw Swagger in action, but here he was tonight, in living color, taking on Rusev. Because we’ve never seen these two tangle before.

2-Titus once again makes the save for someone in a match with Rusev. As Rusev walks to the back, Titus implores him to come back into the ring so that The Real Deal can knock him back to Bulgaria.

And can I just say…Titus needs new music. Something more forecful or distinct. The whistles? Pass.

Botch of the night:

Looked like Becky and Charlotte had an issue during a sunset flip exchange. That, or it was a horrible camera angle that made it look bad.

Commentary of the night:

I think the Golden Truth has finally found the right bedsheet

There’s no room for selfies in sports entertainment.

Lots of crazy things happen in Cincinati. There’s one of them.

I’ll tell you what I can’t believe-that Rusev is in a relationship with Lana. Talk about Beauty and the Beast.

With the state of the American airline industry, maybe Darren Young is better off walking!

LOL Moment of the night:

The Golden Truth, coming down to their song, and for those of us at home? It’s follow the bouncing ball, as we got to sing along. Don’t think I’ve ever seen that before in a wrestling show.

And, if not that? Then Backlund and Darren Young. I still don’t know where this is going or when we actually see it go somewhere, but Backlund is funny.

Noteworthy Moment:

Just enjoyed the New Day/Club interaction, both for the opening segment, and for the main event. It’s nice to see the tag team champions get leaned on as much as New Day has been, and they’ve handled the push with ease, or at least what seems like it. Keep giving them a shot at the spotlight, please. And, ditto for The Club.

Overall lowlights:

Golden Truth with the overplayed “we cost ourselves the match, will we break up, no we make up and fight again” routine.

Breezedango for being just as played out in their own way.

Overall highlights:

The MITB participants, showing off in their tag match.

The Club. New Day. More please. It’s fresh, it’s refreshing and it’s just so entertaining.

After the final bell:

Not a bad show, nice to see some faces that we haven’t seen a lot of get some airtime, but the best thing about tonight was it was all about the new era type stars. New Day (albeit old school holdover Kofi. The Club. Zayn. Owens. Ambrose. The women. It’s a work in progress, but it beats the old stale shows we were getting all too frequently. We wanted different, and different we got. And it’s been pretty good.

 Results:

– New Day start the show before being interrupted by The Club. AJ Styles vs. Kofi Kingston is booked as the main event.

– Becky Lynch defeated Charlotte via DQ. Dana Brooke got involved.

– Dudley Boyz defeated Goldust and R-Truth.

– Dean Ambrose and Sami Zayn defeated Kevin Owens and Alberto Del Rio.

–  Rusev defeated Jack Swagger.

– AJ Styles defeated Kofi Kingston. New Day and The Club brawled after the match.
