SuperCena Set To Return

WWE Championship
News broke this week via Twitter, that John Cena, currently off the main roster due to injury, is set to return to action in late May.

Are we even really surprised he is coming back so soon? Off the cusp of turning 39 years old, John Cena is once again proving to the WWE Universe, and the world, why he’s been dubbed SuperCena by fans, colleagues, and wrestling journalists.

I’ve missed John Cena on RAW, SmackDown, WWE pay-per-views, and general WWE programming. He built a tremendous amount of momentum in 2015, participating in some solid feuds, capturing the United States title and elevating it, as well as helping to push some up-and-coming talent into the spotlight. His matches (and promos) with Kevin Owens were some of the best of that year; and as a fan of his, Cena has been off the WWE radar, for far too long.

Now less than a month away from his return, I ponder what awaits SuperCena. The WWE landscape looks far different from the one he left behind, only months ago; with NXT call ups, superstar returns, and some other colleagues out on injury. As I write this article, Roman Reigns is WWE World Heavyweight Champion; with a tease of a potential heel turn on the horizon. Whether Reigns turns or not, I still can’t help but shake the idea of these two men colliding is a good one; and it seems the only viable pay-per-view for something this grand may be SummerSlam.

However, if Reigns does not jump over to the dark side, and if he manages to retain his WWE championship in time for Cena’s return, would a program with SuperCena help or hurt him? While the WWE continued to tease the idea that Roman could turn heel on the past edition of Monday Night RAW, it never fully happened, and I wonder if they will continue to dangle this in front of their audience, or take the plunge; as many within the WWE Universe think this might be the best idea when it comes to Reigns. I don’t disagree, I just fear that either their own egos (and I mean the WWE higher ups) cannot let go of the idea that Roman should be heel; or perhaps this is part of a bigger picture strategy that I simply cannot see.

But, I digress. Maybe the WWE continues to tease a turn, because they are simply waiting for John Cena to return. The time wasn’t right with Ambrose, maybe its not right with Styles. I don’t foresee Cena turning heel (never say never in pro wrestling), but if Reigns were to turn on Cena, he just may be able to connect with the fan demographic that dislikes him the most; hey, it’s the same demographic that dislikes Cena. Their match (or matches) may not be of epic, but the story – if told correctly – could over the top. Its not rocket science. Bring in a little bit of reality into a WWE storyline; its been done before. Allow Roman to be himself, relay frustration at the WWE putting pressure on him to be a good guy; when he wasn’t. The fact they wanted him to follow in Cena’s footsteps, be Cena 2.0; and how he is not. He can show how fed up he is being compared to Cena, and how angered he is at the assumption that anyone would connect him to being anything like Cena; considering his family’s legacy in the business. This would not only remove Reigns for Cena’s shadow, the heel turn in itself will help garner some respect from fans. Plus, promos with Cena would inevitably help Reigns along with his mic work.

And then maybe we could see John Cena, tie Ric Flair’s WWE title record? (Before you comment, I was being facetious WNZ fans … although there is that little part of me that would love to witness this happen.)

Anything is possible. At the end of the day, I’m simply excited to see John Cena return to in-ring action … anything else that happens after that, is gravy.

Miz should have been 15 time WWE Champion and tie Flair for most title reigns instead of that overrated bum Cena.

It will be interesting on how they would try to handle a storyline between Cena and Reigns. One thing will either happen: Reigns turns heel (which I doubt) or Cena “passes the torch” to Reigns as the new face of the company. I’m not sure how much of a rub Cena will give to Reigns since the two of them are the most despised superstars in the company lol.

Cena is hardly despised. Sure a lot of the Internet fans dislike him. But he doesn’t get anything like the boos Roman gets. He is obviously the most
      Popular superstar commercially.

Cena vs Reigns in an I Quit match or Buried Alive match would be a perfect match for me. I would love to see Reigns say I Quit or be buried.
