WWE Needs To Lessen Roman Reigns’ Push

WWE Network
Hey, I’m a fan of Roman Reigns, I have nothing against the guy. I actually like him; and in a lot of ways, I’m rooting for him. But as a fan, even I can see the writing on the wall, and I’m wondering if the WWE should once again think about placing Reigns out of the title picture and main event spotlight for a few months. I’m not suggesting that they bury the idea of him being the top face, just lessening the push a bit.

I’m not really sure what it is, but Reigns was experiencing a tremendous amount of momentum, late in 2015. Then, heading into Wrestlemania season, he seemingly has lost all that. Is it that fans are drawn to the Triple H’s character, his history, and want to see him wrestle and win at ‘Mania? As a huge fan of his over the years, I know I feel a bit this way. Is there just something about Wrestlemania season that turns fans off of Roman? There’s something in the air about this time of year, that seems to instantly turn the on/off switch for Reigns, and how he connects with the WWE Universe.

Now, (unfortunately), I cannot physically be at every WWE live event across North America, or even at RAW or SmackDown. However, based from the crowd reaction on WWE television, and recent pay-per-views (PPVs), it seems that that the booing outweighs the cheering for this superstar. In fact, I’d love to hear from WNZ fans that have attended recent WWE events, to report on the reaction Reigns really gets when his entrance music hits. I’m genuinely curious.

The pulse on social media seems that fans are mixed. There are those who love the guy, and those who feel like he is being shoved down our throats. He’s Cena 2.0 after all … but here’s the thing: the polarizing reaction John Cena gets from the WWE Universe, works for Cena, because he’s John Cena. He was already well established with his fan base when those “Let’s Go Cena/Cena Sucks” chants emerged. He was comfortable in the ring, with the crowd, etc. And whether you like John Cena are not, you cannot deny the comfort level he has on the mic, addressing fans, and in the ring. Roman is getting there, and seems to be getting use to the jeers (and how to address them), but there still seems that bit of awkwardness around the situation, and his reaction.

In my opinion, I think the WWE needs to cool down on their Roman Reigns push. With the WWE Network Live Event Special taking place in Toronto on March 12th, so many things could change. Ambrose could win the WWE World Heavyweight Championship at that event, and change the programs (and what’s at stake) heading into Wrestlemania 32; Triple H could retain the title during the Network special, and flagship event, and potentially move on to other programs afterward. Yes, he’s older; yes, HHH is a part-time wrestler; but he could hold onto that title for a few months longer, and wait for Cena or Rollins to return. He could also wait until post-WM season, and drop the title Reigns at another PPV down the line.

At the end of the day, with many eyes on the WWE on April 3rd; undeniably the largest event for the company all year, do top officials really want to chance their ‘top face’ getting booed, post-main event match?

Maybe it’s just something about WM season and Roman Reigns. Maybe the guy can have a success run within the company, and hold the title all through the year, and just not at Wrestlemania. Maybe him main eventing this year, brings back those negative feels of how he wasn’t ready to main event WM last year? Or maybe the WWE needs to take a minor break on their Roman Reigns push. Not forever, maybe just a few PPVs. Rethink the Reigns brand, rethink his persona, gimmick, character, and who he connects within the WWE Universe.

The wwe should make roman reigns the top heel and seth rollins the top babyface. Seth rollins is everything you want in a champion.

    • Joseph Lisnow

      what about Ambrose?

      • That boy Alejandro

Ambrose can be both. When he’s a heel his promos are better but i rather see him as a babyface makes him look like the iron man of the wwe like he claims.

They should have put one of the other titles on him first and have a run with them to see how the crowd was gonna be for him. Instead they just decided he is the next Cena and people will have to deal with it. That is why the crowd isn’t behind him like they want people to.

    • biz

Correct. Cena had a nice long run with the U.S. title before he was elevated.

    • Dorathy

      I agree Josh.

People got behind Reigns end of 2015 because he finally became a badass and kicked HHH’s ass as well as League of Snores. Instead of Cena 2.0 we were getting a slither of Austin and Bryan. What happened after that? He went back to being bubblegum babyface. His promo’s became corny again, he didn’t look confident on the mic and the booking was same old same old. If your meant to stand up to “Authority” then you need to do so boldly like an Ambrose character, Bray Wyatt was more bold when he pushed HHH off and he’s a heel! It’s all psychology and to be honest with relation to his in ring game, his mic presentation, his mannerism and more largely on the booking it just doesn’t mesh. And like you Dorathy I actually like the guy, but booking is seriously screwing this guy up. The guy is dressed in a Teflon vest, was part of the most over group in recent years in the Shield, he’s meant to be a serious badass but right now all that is just cosmetic.

    • Dorathy

I totally agree. Thanks for the comment.

He needs to be like he was in The Shield. A brooding figure, who comes out of the blocks as soon as the bell rings. Someone who doesn’t tell bad jokes, someone who doesn’t look disheartened when he’s placed in a match. He needs to destroy people, and actually look like he likes being placed in tough situations.

    • Dorathy

      Good point.

Two WM’s in a row where the face in the main event isn’t over and is getting pushed down our throats… it’s almost as if they’re daring us to boo him out of the house when he wins there( because lets face it HHH will drop it there and feud with Shane mac post mania). Then again it could be the straw that broke the camel’s back and make him turn heel?

    • Joseph Lisnow

no heel turn. i see Ambrose turning heel first.

    • Dorathy

Fair enough. Stayed tuned for my Dear Creative tomorrow. I think it’s popping up at 11:00 a.m. EST.

Your comments always make me smile! LOL Listen, I said, I’m fan of his. HOwever, sometimes you need to take two steps back, to take a giant leap forward. Thanks for reading, and thanks for the comment. PS – I was sick for a majority of February … please don’t jinx me 😉

    • Dorathy

Thank you for the comment. It seems like they are pointing towards Ambrose being a heel, but do you think the Universe will let that happen? I mean, he’s so over. And I agree with you, and others: Reigns should’ve held a midcard title before the WWE title. It’s like a rite of passage or something. Thank you again.

      • Jean-François Maigrot

Except the younguest, the Universe is ready for a Ambrose heel turn, or Rollins come to wrestlemania make sure Reigns lose . (no action just be there )
