Top WWE Draft Shockers

WWE Network
As one person commented on social media last night, it’s a great time to be a wrestling fan. We have RAW on Monday nights, SmackDown (LIVE) on Tuesdays, NXT on Wednesdays, TNA on Thursdays, Ring of Honor on Fridays, and the weekend to graze the WWE Network.

And SmackDown LIVE this past July 19th offered yet another great reason to be a WWE fan, with the much-anticipated brand extension draft. There were plenty of pleasant surprises, and not-so happy ones: and I’m going to dive into both categories, starting with my favorites.

Best Of The Best

  • NXT’s Finn Balor rounding up the top five draft picks. Shocking, because, while I expected to see his name picked, I didn’t expect it so early on. Finn Balor was picked before John Cena, Randy Orton, Bray Wyatt, Kevin Owens, Sami Zayn, Sasha Banks, and either of the mid-card title holders. Shows just how high WWE brass is on him, and I cannot wait to see what this guy does on the main roster.
  • Speaking of surprise NXT picks, once again, I wasn’t surprised Nia Jax was on the list; I’m just surprised that she too, was drafted so early. She made it the television draft, in round 5. I am quite excited about seeing Nia on RAW; I love her NXT character, her unique look, and aggression. Guess the WWE brass does too.
  • The fact that Charlotte hit #3 on the draft pick list. Speaks huge volumes of what she’s accomplished as a superstar since her debut, and how far women’s wrestling has come within the WWE, in a little over a year.
  • AJ Styles grabbing spot #4, before John Cena (and a few other established main eventers), also provides insight on how the WWE views this new talent. AJ is certainly not new to the squared circle, but being with the company a mere seven months, it seems Styles is settling in nicely.

Not-So-Great Surprises

  • Cesaro gets drafted at #28? Really, WWE, really? (insert The Miz’s annoying voice here).
  • Splitting up the Wyatts. The last time it was done, it was an epic fail – not sure how this time will be any different. Especially with Erik Rowan, out in left field, all on his own on SmackDown. Perhaps he will be joined by Luke Harper, when he returns, and the Family will represent on both brands (or provide an excuse for Bray to show up on SmackDown, now and again): but for now, I’m confused as to why the WWE chose to do this.
  • No Bayley, Asuka, Austin Aries, or Shinuke Nakamura? Surely you have some surprises up your sleeve, WWE, to debut these incredible NXT talents in another fashion … and soon …

Yikes, you are right. All those beards can be confusing sometimes.

Aren’t they still gonna do trades

    • Dorathy

      too true …

SD gets Owens, Zayn, Cesaro, and Banks. Raw gets Naomi.

  • IM MAD JOHNSON #NewNation

Raw is gonna be horrible especially since it’s clear WWE won’t do a heel turn for BumMan SMH I’m convinced Vince is determined on ruining the guys career. I feel the same way about Cesaro too it’s a shame he won’t even come close to getting a push even over Darren Young

    • Joseph Lisnow

I see Young’s push ending after 1 or 2 PPVs.

I honestly believe it might last a little longer. Backlund is the actual gimmick not DY and just based off crowd response people are actually behind it

  • Mike

I think the wyatt family continues as a three with Rowen joining bray for now and Harper will likely join them. Wwe obviously wanted to allow strowman a chance to go it alone. I think it was to soon for Aires to come up, and although I expect nakamura to come up, it is a little early. Joe is the champ, no chance he was gonna be drafted, I think wwe drafted some of the middle of the pack nxt girls like carmella and Eva Marie and bliss, leaving Bayley to have a bigger impact debut. The same goes for leaving joe, nakamura and Aires debuts. I was shocked Bayley was not drafted
    Though.
