WWE Backlash 2016 Staff Predictions

Zack Ryder
We’re nearing the middle of September and Backlash is finally upon us.

6 matches have been booked for the show and we here at Wrestlenewz felt the urge to predict the card, like every other wrestling fan. We gave it our best attempt and here’s what the staff came up with.

Don’t forget to add your own predictions in our comments section. Let’s see if anyone correctly predicts all 6 matches.

Backlash play by play coverage is being handled by WrestleNewz and the pre-show begins at around 7 PM EST with the main card at 8 PM EST. We’ll also have the fallout, so stay tuned.

WWE Championship: Dean Ambrose vs. AJ Styles

Dorathy: Styles. I would have zero problem with whomever wins this match, but I think its time for Styles to rack up another World Championship to his resume.

John: This one is going to be less of a match and more of a brawl, I think. And that’s not a bad thing. The problem with that, though, is that while AJ Styles may not strike fear into opponents, he’s quite competent and that, I think, pulls him through. Winner, and new WWE Champion-AJ Styles.

Joe: AJ Styles. We’ve seen AJ Styles have several chances at the WWE Championship since he joined the roster nine months ago. He could, and probably should, have been given the belt already but Roman Reigns was always in his way. With Reigns on RAW and Styles riding that major win over John Cena, it’s his time to claim gold.

SmackDown Women’s Championship: Alexa Bliss vs. Becky Lynch vs. Carmella vs. Naomi vs. Natalya vs. Nikki Bella

Dorathy: Becky Lynch. Wishful thinking is my reasoning behind this. She seems like the face of the SD women right now, time to crown her as queen.

John: I could make a case for almost anyone in this match, but there is one whom I-and many others-want to see win. And for those of you not paying attention, that would be Becky Lynch. I think her time is now.

Joe: Becky Lynch. I’m going with the superstar who has never been NXT or Women’s Champion, though she deserves to wear gold. The brand extension is Becky’s best shot at winning a title as the RAW brand is stacked with competition. Nikki Bella is my choice for runner up.

Intercontinental Championship: The Miz vs. Dolph Ziggler

Dorathy: The Miz. This is another hard one for me to call. Ziggler has a new fire burning under him, so a win here would justify this and another back-to-back loss may weaken it. The Miz,  however, too has been on a good run as heel; and a loss would lose this momentum. We will see.

John: How this one goes will, I think, say a lot for both men moving forward. And with Miz seeming to find his niche again with a pretty strong rant on Daniel Bryan? I am worried this one won’t end well for Dolph. But, for Dolph, how many more opportunities can he be given, only to squander them? Something has to give. My call: Ziggler with the win.

Joe: The Miz. Right now, The Miz might be the top heel on SmackDown. Giving him the IC Championship again was the best decision WWE ever made for the former Tough Enough contestant. Don’t be surprised if he’s challenging for the WWE Championship within two months.

SmackDown Tag Team Champion: TBD vs. Heath Slater and Rhyno

Dorathy: The Usos. If the Usos progress to the next round, which I see them doing, then it makes total sense for them to take home the prize. The added heat will be the fact that Slater doesn’t get signed. It also nicely sets up a program between them and American Alpha, whom they injured to get booted out of the tourney to begin with.

John: Having made it this far, I only wonder one thing-how many people are supporting this improbable run by the unlikely duo? I know I am enjoying it, and I have a feeling, if for only one night, Slater and Rhyno will be called champions.

Joe: The Usos. This will of course only happen if The Usos can win earlier in the evening. I think Rhyno is going gore Heather Slater. I’m not sure if he’ll do it on purpose and cost the team or if it happens after a miscommunication between the odd pairing.

Randy Orton vs. Bray Wyatt

Dorathy: Orton. This is a little too hard to call. Both need a win, both need to look strong. If Bray wins (which he just might, I am 50-50 on this prediction), it could be thanks to a Luke Harper interference and return. I have this feeling …

John: I think this one is going to be a brawl all over the place, far from a wrestling match. Both men need this win badly, and they will stop at nothing to claim victory. But, it will be all for nothing, as I see this ending as either a double count out or a DQ. Meaning we will see this one again.

Joe: Randy Orton. This is a tough match to predict and it’s almost a coin toss, especially considering the feud isn’t likely over tonight. I went with Orton because since he returned, all fans can remember is the bloody beating he took at SummerSlam. Both badly need a win, but Orton more so that Bray Wyatt.

Winner Advances To Tag Team Tournament Finals: The Usos (Jimmy Uso and Jey Uso) vs. The Hype Bros (Zack Ryder and Mojo Rawley)

Dorathy: The Usos. They just turned heeled, Slater and Rhyno are faces and riding a huge underdog story right now.

John: This ought to be the easiest one of the night to pick. I honestly don’t even see a way Hype can win here, as it just would not make a ton of sense. So my call here is for The Usos to win, and move on to the finals.

Joe: The Usos. Since The Usos turned heel on SmackDown this week, the next logical step is for them to win and advance to the tag team tournament finals. Otherwise, turning heel doesn’t make much sense.
