WWE SummerSlam 2016 Staff Predictions

Xavier Woods
It’s nearing the end of August already and SummerSlam is finally upon us.

13 matches have been booked for the show and we here at Wrestlenewz felt the urge to predict the card, like every other wrestling fan. We gave it our best attempt and here’s what the staff came up with.

Don’t forget to add your own predictions in our comments section. Let’s see if anyone correctly predicts all 9 matches.

SummerSlam play by play coverage is being handled by WrestleNewz and it begins at around 7 PM EST. We’ll also have the fallout, so stay tuned.

Brock Lesnar vs. Randy Orton

Dorathy: Orton. Speaking of underdog, with Lesnar’s recent USADA scandal, I’m hoping ViperVille can knock Suplex City off of its block a little; and an RKO outta no where can lay out Lesnar. Here’s hoping …

John: This one, right here, might just be the spectacle of the evening. My thoughts? Lesnar is a part-timer, and if WWE had any marbles, they probably would have suspended him for his failed tests. But it’s Lesnar, sp they didn’t. Orton is just coming back, and I’d expect he’s not a part timer-at least, not the same way Lesnar is. So, an Orton win does make sense here, more than one for Orton.

Joe: Brock Lesnar. WWE has made Brock Lesnar look unstoppable and it takes a special superstar to defeat him (like John Cena, Triple H or Undertaker). Randy Orton might be special, but he’s not capable of stopping “The Beast.”

WWE World Heavyweight Championship: Dean Ambrose vs. Dolph Ziggler

Dorathy: Ziggler. I’ve always loved the underdog, and while I love Ambrose as champ; one more run for Ziggler would be epic.

John: Another title match, another potential for a show stealing match. I really have enjoyed Ambrose and his run as champion. But it wasn’t all that long ago when Ziggler was nearly the top face in WWE, too. As much as an Ambrose win makes sense, I just feel it’s time for Ziggler to have another run at the top-make or break time, in his case.

Joe: Dean Ambrose. I wouldn’t mind seeing Dolph Ziggler get a real run as WWE Champion, but this match is about making him a heel. Ziggler will nearly have the win several times before Ambrose gets the victory and then Ziggler turns on the fans.

WWE Universal Championship: Seth Rollins vs. Finn Balor

Dorathy: Balor. It may be waaayyy tooo soon to predict this, especially since he just debuted, but I’m predicting Finn Balor as the first WWE Universal Champion. I can’t wait to see what that title looks like.

John: Another big main roster call-up, another big match for said call-up. Rollins and Balor clashing for the new Universal title will be one of the best matches for the night. Rollins is a known entity, he’s held the title with a good bit of success. Balor has held the NXT title, but obviously not one for RAW. That is, until now. Yes folks, I do think Balor wins the belt tonight.

Joe: Seth Rollins. I don’t see the company giving Finn Balor the title at this point in his WWE career. Balor has lots of hype and I think his day will come, but it’s still another 10 months away.

U.S. Championship: Rusev vs. Roman Reigns

Dorathy: Rusev. There was really only one reason for the Rusev/Reigns main event match this past Monday Night RAW, and that was for Roman to beat Rusev cleanly, and save face for Sunday’s loss. Sure, Roman is still laying low since his 30-day suspension, but they don’t want to completely bury him.

John: I look at this match like this: if Roman wins, no one may care. If Rusev wins, Reigns may need to be totally overhauled. Seriously, between his suspension and now being completely out of the world title picture, he can’t fall much farther. With that said, it’s Reigns leaving SummerSlam with the gold.

Joe: Rusev. I think we get a DQ ending here or count out. Roman Reigns has clearly annoyed WWE with his suspension, though he won’t get pinned by Rusev. That would destroy Reigns’ stock.

IC Championship: The Miz vs. Apollo Crews

Dorathy: The Miz. I love Crews’ athleticism and what he does in the ring; but he needs to work on his character before he gets to hold gold (even mid-card gold).

John: I’ll admit it. I actually forgot about this match. It’s a very crowded card, so this one, unfortunately, has gotten lost in the shuffle. As much as I want to see Crews win, I think Miz holds onto the gold a bit longer here.

Joe: Apollo Crews. The Miz seems like the perfect fit as IC Champion. He’s not WWE Championship material, but he makes the IC title seem important. Still, it’s a New Era and that includes a push for Crews.

Women’s Championship: Sasha Banks vs. Charlotte

Dorathy: Sasha Banks. I don’t see Banks dropping the title back to Charlotte, anytime soon. This SummerSlam match will end this program nicely, and it will now be time for Champ Sasha to move onto the next one.

John: Charlotte had a good reign, but fans were super excited to have Sasha Banks finally hold the gold. Her short reign has done nothing to make me think she’s not deserving of the top spot, and so with that said I feel comfortable calling for Banks to retain it.

Joe: Sasha Banks. Charlotte had one of the best runs with the title, yet every champion needs to pass the baton. Banks just won the title, so Charlotte regaining the gold this quick makes little sense.

Tag Team Championship: New Day (Kofi Kingston & Xavier Woods) vs. The Club (Karl Anderson & Luke Gallows)

Dorathy: The Club. The New Day has had an incredible and record-breaking tag title run, but it is now time for a change.

John: New Day has had a great run. A record breaking run. But all good things come to an end, and SummerSlam is where their current reign ends, and the Club’s reign begins. Simple as that, its time to see what the all-world tag team can do in WWE.

Joe: New Day. For almost 12 full months, New Day have taken the WWE by storm. They made the tag team title scene interesting again and deserve one more month with the gold.

A.J. Styles vs. John Cena

Dorathy: Styles. Simply put, those who believe that Cena isn’t about putting new talent over, will be shocked on Sunday. I think Styles will win cleanly, the match will be epic, and both men will come out of it looking strong.

John: This one seems to be a sure thing, in the sense that with these two, we know what we are going to get. Which, frankly, will be one of the more enjoyable matches on the show. And who wins? I have a feeling this one goes to Styles again.

Joe: AJ Styles. John Cena’s new role is putting the younger talent over and there’s nobody better than Styles. A win for Styles means he could be challenging for the WWE Championship next month.

Chris Jericho & Kevin Owens vs. Enzo Amore & Big Cass

Dorathy: Enzo and Cass. This is an iffy prediction for me. The promos between these four have been so incredible, I foresee an extension of this program, and maybe a few more matches on television in their future. There is a possibility that Enzo and Cass lose, only to redeem themselves in the coming weeks.

John: While I could totally see the faces losing this one, just because they are going against crafty heels…i don’t expect it. Honestly, this is a placeholder feud for Enzo and Cass. Meaning they get the win here.

Joe: Enzo & Big Cass. Since SummerSlam is from Brooklyn, I see the local boys scoring the win to a massive pop. Either Chris Jericho or Kevin Owens will turn on the other.

Carmella, Becky Lynch, and Naomi vs. Natalya, Alexa Bliss, and TBD

Dorathy: Natalya and Alexa Bliss. Wasn’t it always a 2-on-3 handicap match? So, Eva’s been removed from the match, but I think the outcome will be the same: win for the heels. Maybe Nikki Bella comes back (as she has now been cleared to wrestle) and helps them, or maybe they cheat somehow for the win? Maybe someone on team face turns. Who knows? I just have a feeling Natte and Bliss take it home.

John: This one, right now, is a handicap match thanks to Eva’s recent suspension. So we have Becky, Carmella and Naomi, going against Natalya and Alexa Bliss. So, based on sheer numbers? The babyfaces take this one. Barring an unexpected and big name for the heels’ third? This should be a face win

Joe: Carmella, Becky Lynch, and Naomi. This is mostly a guess and the match could go in any direction. With Eva Marie out of the picture, I figure the faces win. Hopefully this is kept short.

Sami Zayn and Neville vs. The Dudley Boyz (Bubba Ray Dudley and D-Von Dudley)

Dorathy: Zayn and Neville. There is no real program here, and it just seems fitting for Zayn and Neville to score the win.

John: This is sad that this was relegated to the pre-show, because, well, Zayn and Neville alone would be worth it. But, sadly, Bubba Ray and Devon have become jobbers to the stars, so they land on the pre-show, where the not-a-tag team of Zayn and Neville should entertain and get a win that will, in the grand scheme of things, probably mean nothing for them.

Joe: Sami Zayn and Neville. I really like how WWE paired these two together. They don’t have a major singles storyline going, so let’s see what they produce as a team. The Dudley Boyz know they’re here to enhance talent.

American Alpha, The Hype Bros, and The Usos vs. Breezango, The Ascension, and The Vaudevillains

Dorathy: The team of American Alpha, The Hype Bros, and Usos. The WWE has been high on American Alpha, and another win to make them strong, seems fitting here. I expect Jordan or Gable to be the source of the win.

John: This one, my friends, has train wreck written all over it. That, or it’s a really cheezy way of getting 6 tag teams on the undercard. This one I will give to the heels, but in the end, if a horribly concocted match happens on the SummerSlam pre-show…will anyone care? Sad main roster PPV debut for Alpha, by the way.

Joe: American Alpha, The Hype Bros, and The Usos. Just looking at the two sides and it’s easy to see who WWE is pushing. This should be all about American Alpha showing why they’re future tag team champions.

Cesaro vs. Sheamus

Dorathy: Sheamus. No great logic behind this prediction, other then the fact that Cesaro has gotten the best of Sheamus a couple times during this program.

John: I don’t expect a lot from this one, other than I expect it to be a fairly physical match. Unfortunately for Sheamus, I do expect Cesaro to be triumphant in this contest.

Joe: Sheamus. If WWE wants to stretch this best of seven series, the heel has to win the first match. Sheamus should win three in a row, so Cesaro has to really work his way to victory. Then, Cesaro turns heel after losing the seventh and final match.
