As we continue down the road to WrestleMania 29, the World Title matches are the only official matches set for the show of shows. With much focus on those World Titles, less focus has been given to the Intercontinental and United States Championships. Therefore, WWE fans are wondering who exactly will be challenging for the midcard titles at WrestleMania 29.
Wade Barrett had been feuding with NXT newcomer Bo Dallas since the Royal Rumble match when Dallas eliminated Barrett. However, as time went on, we have seen less and less of Dallas on WWE programming. This was probably a wise choice as pushing Dallas too soon would have been another mistake by WWE. Too many superstars have been pushed too quickly or too early.
Barrett has not gotten a lot of attention recently, even missing the Elimination Chamber pay-per-view entirely. This would not be the first time WWE has treated the Intercontinental Champion this way. When The Miz was holding the title beginning with Raw 1000, he was consistently booked to lose to upper midcard- and main event-superstars like John Cena.
Most recently, Wade Barrett has had a number of interactions with Sheamus. Although we have seen these two square off a number of times, it’s a great idea for WrestleMania 29. Sheamus has been his normal goofy self when making fun of Wade Barrett and his movie career, but Sheamus is also an upper midcard- to main event-level superstar. Barrett defending the Intercontinental title against Sheamus could bring more prestige and relevancy to the championship.
The United States Champion, Antonio Cesaro is currently not feuding with any one particular WWE superstar. After meaningless feuds with the likes of R-Truth and The Miz, along with matches against Brodus Clay and Great Khali, Cesaro has been losing to Randy Orton.
Orton would make for a great WrestleMania opponent for Antonio Cesaro in a similar way that Sheamus would be for Wade Barrett. Booking big names like Randy Orton and Sheamus against the midcard champions shows WWE fans how relevant and important those titles are in the company. However, Randy Orton may be busy elsewhere at WrestleMania 29.
This past week on Raw, Randy Orton delivered an RKO to Seth Rollins of The Shield. Orton had been feuding with The Shield until entering the Elimination Chamber and being replaced by John Cena in the feud.
Will Randy Orton face The Shield or Antonio Cesaro at WrestleMania 29?
Chances are Orton will team with two of Ryback, Sheamus and Chris Jericho against Rollins, Dean Ambrose and Roman Reigns. However, once again, that leaves Antonio Cesaro without an opponent.
One scenario that was discussed on my weekly podcast, Oh You Didn’t Know Radio, was having a battle royal during the preshow of WrestleMania. This would allow for a number of lower-card superstars to have a match at WrestleMania, while keeping the suspense of Antonio Cesaro’s opponent. One possible winner to the battle royal could be a returning Christian.
Antonio Cesaro has a ton of potential as he has already brought prestige back to the United States title after a horrid reign by Santino Marella. Marella was another example of a midcard champion who, like The Miz, consistently lost matches. Cesaro could be a future Money in the Bank winner and without a doubt, World Champion. However, he needs some real competition and a lengthy feud to show what he can do.
