WWE WrestleMania 29: Who Will Challenge for the Midcard Titles?

Wade Barrett

As we continue down the road to WrestleMania 29, the World Title matches are the only official matches set for the show of shows. With much focus on those World Titles, less focus has been given to the Intercontinental and United States Championships. Therefore, WWE fans are wondering who exactly will be challenging for the midcard titles at WrestleMania 29.

Wade Barrett had been feuding with NXT newcomer Bo Dallas since the Royal Rumble match when Dallas eliminated Barrett. However, as time went on, we have seen less and less of Dallas on WWE programming. This was probably a wise choice as pushing Dallas too soon would have been another mistake by WWE. Too many superstars have been pushed too quickly or too early.

Barrett has not gotten a lot of attention recently, even missing the Elimination Chamber pay-per-view entirely. This would not be the first time WWE has treated the Intercontinental Champion this way. When The Miz was holding the title beginning with Raw 1000, he was consistently booked to lose to upper midcard- and main event-superstars like John Cena.

Most recently, Wade Barrett has had a number of interactions with Sheamus. Although we have seen these two square off a number of times, it’s a great idea for WrestleMania 29. Sheamus has been his normal goofy self when making fun of Wade Barrett and his movie career, but Sheamus is also an upper midcard- to main event-level superstar. Barrett defending the Intercontinental title against Sheamus could bring more prestige and relevancy to the championship.

The United States Champion, Antonio Cesaro is currently not feuding with any one particular WWE superstar. After meaningless feuds with the likes of R-Truth and The Miz, along with matches against Brodus Clay and Great Khali, Cesaro has been losing to Randy Orton.

Orton would make for a great WrestleMania opponent for Antonio Cesaro in a similar way that Sheamus would be for Wade Barrett. Booking big names like Randy Orton and Sheamus against the midcard champions shows WWE fans how relevant and important those titles are in the company. However, Randy Orton may be busy elsewhere at WrestleMania 29.

This past week on Raw, Randy Orton delivered an RKO to Seth Rollins of The Shield. Orton had been feuding with The Shield until entering the Elimination Chamber and being replaced by John Cena in the feud.

Will Randy Orton face The Shield or Antonio Cesaro at WrestleMania 29?

Chances are Orton will team with two of Ryback, Sheamus and Chris Jericho against Rollins, Dean Ambrose and Roman Reigns. However, once again, that leaves Antonio Cesaro without an opponent.

One scenario that was discussed on my weekly podcast, Oh You Didn’t Know Radio, was having a battle royal during the preshow of WrestleMania. This would allow for a number of lower-card superstars to have a match at WrestleMania, while keeping the suspense of Antonio Cesaro’s opponent. One possible winner to the battle royal could be a returning Christian.

Antonio Cesaro has a ton of potential as he has already brought prestige back to the United States title after a horrid reign by Santino Marella. Marella was another example of a midcard champion who, like The Miz, consistently lost matches. Cesaro could be a future Money in the Bank winner and without a doubt, World Champion. However, he needs some real competition and a lengthy feud to show what he can do.

Put the US Champioship on The #WWW Kid Zack Ryder

    • fcpmac

Ye and while we’re at we’ll put doink the clown against Barrett and Santino can team with Hornswoggle vs. team hell no, idiot.

It’s honestly not that bad. I know that 50% of the IWC absolutely hate Ryder but when you look at it’s a decent move. It’s just the US belt so it’s not like it’s the biggest thing out there so putting it on someone like Ryder at least brings attention to it. The last time I even cared about a US title feud was Dolph vs. Ryder. Feud meaning lasting a few months instead of a few weeks. The guy isn’t the worst in the ring, he sells alot of merchandise, and surprisingly still gets huge pops at live tapings. It really sucks that the WWE can’t get over someone getting big without them “creating” them, it’s ruined so many people including most of the WCW and ECW talent that came over during the invasion.

Yeah his pissing and moaning is annoying but idk what i’d be saying if I were in that position. The guy single handedly saved his clearly dying career and made a name out of it and I respect that. It’s sucks people are so easy to dismiss trying. As of now in my eyes he’s the biggest underdog in the WWE, trust me, worse wrestlers and worse gimmicks have gotten people the WWE Championship so why not give this guy an actual good run with the US title.

And I know due to my picture I seem biased but I don’t want to see Ryder anything more than the US champ until he improves alot. I am a fan but i’m also critical.

      Holy Christ no….

I’d love to see a Cesaro/Y2J program thru WM with Jericho putting over Cesaro before his next break. He jobs at WM and wins the farewell match the next night in a non-title. The Sheamus/Barrett story needs to continue. I like the idea of Ryback/Show/Orton vs. The Shield. Maybe either ending with a Show face turn, or him costing the team the match and setting up a Big Show/Ryback feud. In that instance Orton and Ryback don’t lose clean, and The Shield pick up a big win.

Antonio Cesaro vs Orton huh? Isn’t that the match that loses 400k viewers everytime they wrestle.. And I’m not arguing,I’m just saying..

Good someone knows that random matches don’t draw!

      • CMmox

It’s true. You can’t just throw people in random matches and random tag teams and just expect it to work.

      • Chelsii

Regardless if it’s a random match or not, Randy doesn’t draw.

  • Demetri G.

How about a Triple Threat or Fatal Four Way match for each title? This way you have a champion, and several good contenders in each match. And, it would give more wrestlers the chance to be on the card. By the way, Jericho should be in a match with Ziggler. Those two can really bring the house down!

    • xXwindsofchangeXx

The midcard doesn’t have enough strength for that. Because everyone with potential is either stuck in a stable or tag team, injured, or just buried – or a combination of all three.

  • http://www.facebook.com/eric.cormier.37 Eric Cormier

It seems that the IWC are going to be throwing names out there in the hat without thought so lets sit this through for a second.

As of right now the only face I seeing beating Barret for the Intercontinental title right now is Sheamus. It’s a good move considering alot of light was lost on the title since Cody jobbed to the Big Show at last year’s mania IMO. Christian was a good champ and may hold it again but the light needs to be shined on that title and I feel Sheamus has alot of light on him ATM

As for Cesaro he’s had a good US title run but as of this moment the longer he holds it the worse it is for him moving up. In my eyes I always saw the Intercontenental as a gateway to the main event where now due to bad handling since Dolph the US title is for the top of the midcards who are hoping to get the IC. I do feel after Dolph Ryder was red hot and should’ve held on to it longer instead of jobbing to Swagger because of the WWE’s horribly ability to ruin stars they didn’t “create”, because past Ryder, Swagger jobbed to Santino, who jobbed to Cesaro. It’s been awhile since Ryder went after that belt, since NoC, but he’s been jobbing way to much (WWE’s mistake since look how much money he brings in), so I don’t think he’s good for it now, and since The Miz seems to be done with it, the US belt maybe going to someone like Kofi or hopefully a returning Tyson Kidd in the future. Who knows, they’ve had Cesaro beat everyone lol

    • http://twitter.com/MarcosPWT Marcos Mendes

And I’m pretty sure everyone on this boards would have more heat than Cesaro coming out of the curtain.

I think they should have a fatal 4 way for at lest one of those titiles Antonio Cesaro would be the ideal guy to have his titile in this match im a huge fan but in recent weeks it has come cleear that he will drop the tiyile soon why not put kofi miz and cody in this match and have cody win im a huge fan of cody and since him and sandow are through it would be good to have him win it

  • SdotC

You know neither title will be defended on the main show in a featured singles match, and you KNOW neither of those guys would go over any of the people you mentioned.

The one thing I agree about is Bo Dallas. Barrett should be main eventing, not losing to a rookie. Dallas is hardly the 123-Kid. When the Kid wrestled Bret Hart, you believed he could be champion.

I’m sure it WILL be a battle royal or something stupid like that.

the miz will win at wm and continue his undefeatead streak 4-0

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=795579028 Diego Alfredo

I didnt think Cesaro’s feud with Miz was weak or meaningful. Firts time since Miz’s face turn I see him with revenge, passion and even more fast in the ring.

Santino Marella The Great Khali, Zack Ryder and The Colons at WM? You’re kidding right?

      • tomcatjerrymouse

Oh I forgot tto mention Brodus Clay.

  • tomcatjerrymouse

Randy Orton wins the U.S. title before WM. Dean Ambrose challenges Orton for the title at WM. Seth Rollins and Roman Reigns challenge for the tag team titles at WM. The Shield win the titles at WM.
Sheamus vs, Wade Barrett is obviously the only way to go as far as the IC title is concerned.
