WWE WrestleMania 29: Why the WWE Title Match Will Be a Triple Threat

CM Punk

At WrestleMania 29, WWE Champion The Rock will defend the title against either John Cena or CM Punk…or both. On Raw, CM Punk convinced John Cena to put his WrestleMania title shot on the line against Punk next week. This seems to be a great set up to make the WWE Championship match a triple threat involving The Rock, John Cena and CM Punk. Here are a number of reasons why the match should be a triple threat.

The match on Raw next week between CM Punk and John Cena will most likely end in controversy. There is no other reason to have the match. If WWE wanted to have Cena versus Rock part two, it is already set up. CM Punk has lost to The Rock twice already. If Punk wasn’t going to be involved in the match, The Undertaker or someone else would be beginning a feud with Punk. The real mystery is how the match will end in controversy.

The WWE title match needs to be a triple threat because there isn’t anyone else worthy of facing CM Punk at WrestleMania. The one exception may be The Undertaker, but I have always been against the idea. Now that Punk isn’t even champion, the match makes little sense. Plus, The Undertaker isn’t even confirmed to have a match at WrestleMania. If The Undertaker takes this year off, who would face CM Punk? Sheamus? Ryback again? A triple threat match is the only one that makes sense.

CM Punk deserves to be in the main event of WrestleMania 29. After holding the WWE Championship for 434 days, he deserves it. Punk took a backseat to John Cena at almost every pay-per-view during his title reign. Cena’s match against John Laurinaitis even ended a pay-per-view over Punk’s WWE title match. Punk faced Chris Jericho last year at WrestleMania for the WWE title, while The Rock faced John Cena. Cena versus Rock part one is an exception, but Punk has earned the right to main event WrestleMania 29.

John Cena down

The final reason why the WWE title match should be a triple threat encounter is because like many others, I don’t want to see John Cena versus The Rock part two. Part of the reason is because of the tagline, once in a lifetime. However, The Score’s Arda Ocal made a good point on Twitter that every mega match has occurred more than once. Hogan versus Andre the Giant, The Rock versus Stone Cold Steve Austin and even Hulk Hogan versus The Rock all occurred on multiple occasions. Another part of the reason why I don’t want to see Cena and Rock again is because the last year and a half has been about Punk. There has been a lot of focus on Punk’s title reign ever since his heel turn on Raw 1000. The focus is still on Punk.

Between having so much focus on CM Punk, lack of suitable opponents and his opportunity to join Cena and Rock on Raw, the WWE title match will end up being a triple threat. There is no other option for CM Punk that matches up to the level a triple threat match would provide. The years of 2012 and 2013 in WWE have been all about three superstars – The Rock, John Cena and CM Punk. That is why the WWE title match at WrestleMania 29 will be a triple threat.

What do you think? Will the WWE title match at WrestleMania 29 be a triple threat? Why or why not?

Rock with new WWE Title

Sadly I think we have seen the last of Undertaker…I’m pretty much sure Punk will get involved in Once In A LIfetime part 2. Depending on how next week goes it will determine if we get a Triple Threat or not, I still have SOME hope of Taker but who knows.

It’s not the last of the undertaker, he just couldn’t heal up quick enough for this wrestlemania

      • coolkd1

I think undertaker will appear but not wrestle, I think he will hype his retirement match wm 30.

      • Rishano

undertaker should just retire if he needs more than a whole year for just 1 match

      • tomcatjerrymouse

Injuries are not the issue. It’s money.

  • http://cashd00d.co.cc/ WHAT?

McMahon vs Heyman. The lights go out and The Shield run out and lay a beat down to McMahon. HHH comes to McMahon’s aid, only to be beaten down himself. The lights go out again. *GONG* Undertaker dispatches of the entire Shield and then Bork Laser appears on stage. Lesnar vs Undertaker at Wrestlemania.

    • http://www.facebook.com/Blubibit Chris Chambers

No, thats were ur wrong, Mcmahon Vs Heyman will end up like this: there fight and alla suddenly Lesnars music hits and he toys with Vince, when hes about to hit him with a f5/karma sundra lock HHH music hits and out comes HHH to vinces aid and they trow down with HHH cleaning house.

      • Chelsii

        Karma Sundra? Wtf.

        • CMmox

lol I think he means Kimura Lock?

          • Rishano

i read an article where cena said in an intervieuw that he was worried a couple months ago that he wouldnt be on the wrestlemania card.
ahahaha so what? cena you aleready got plenty enough main event matches at wrestlemania its called wrestlemania not john cena mania .
cena got more than enough wrestlemania main events and he doesnt even deserve it there are a lot of other superstars who are way more talented than cena and who deserve to get in the main event of wrestlemania instead of cena who isnt that much talented only on the mic

    • Sean Patrick

Undertaker wouldn’t survive a believeable match with Lesnar. Taker will either have a light work match as part of a team or only make a cameo this year. Then he trains for a final match at WMXXX. Maybe even call the match a year early. As much as I want to see Taker/Punk, it doesn’t feel right for Taker’s last match. Taker/Rock?

  • DoingMaThing

I read the article and the author basically kissed Punk’s @ss. He tried to sound neutral but he’s obviously a Punk fan.

I want the WWE Title match to be a triple threat but it’s not because i think Punk deserves it. It’s because that’s the perfect way of making Rock lose without being pinned. Rock doesn’t need to be pinned to lose. He also doesn’t need to be the one tapping out.

No one should pin Rock at the grandest stage. If Cena is going to win then have him pin CM Punk for the 3 count. If Punk is going to win, have Punk pin Cena for the 3 count. Rock should NOT be pinned. Not at WrestleMania.

    • http://twitter.com/sethgutt Seth Guttenplan

I am not necessarily a Punk fan, just a fan of the idea of the triple threat. I don’t want to see Cena vs Rock again one on one.

      • Cee Jaih

No one wants to see that match

    • Chelsii

It doesn’t even matter, CM Punk does deserve to be in it.

    • http://www.facebook.com/joseph.douglas.96 Joseph Douglas

Better yet have Punk make Cena tap out.

  • http://www.facebook.com/Egofenix Jay Mcclintock

Absolutely not a triple threat. There’s no point. After Punk Lost Twice. I’m thinking they are definitely going more for Lesnar-Punk. Its a tale of two egos.

    • http://www.facebook.com/joseph.douglas.96 Joseph Douglas

You mean Lesnar vs Triple H?

  • Adolph Ziggler

i hope punk faces undertaker this year. sure rock beat him twice and got a nice little 3 month run as champion, but 1.) cm punks reign means far more than the rock’s and 2.) breaking the streak would be something that no other person past present or future has or will ever do again. that would be cm punks “title” forever.

    • Jeff

      The streak should never die

      • http://www.facebook.com/tygrrs.gorgon Tygrr’s Gorgon

Punk wont end the streak because hes retiring around 2015. WWE Wouldnt give the streak breaker to someone who doesnt need it or wont use it, to build himself to be the next big thing for years and years, not 2-3. And thats IF it ends

        • http://www.facebook.com/joseph.douglas.96 Joseph Douglas

They will give it to Cena next year.

  • joe

No one wants to see cena beat rock at mania. Yeh cena is the face of the wwe but he shudnt have won the royal rumble in general. Ryback shud have won tbe rumble and beat the rock at wrestlemania and win the title. Ryback got screwed by wwe plenty of times outta the title. That wud be the best way to put over ryback to the company and to the wwe universe and show that hes bot another waist of talent

    • Chelsii

Ryback is awful… he IS a waste of talent. Seeing as he has none. I’d rather Cena win anyday over Rybotch.

  • Izo

uhhh pretty sure the whole reasoning for the match is probably to give them the option of either taker or triple threat. According to the all knowing interwebs taker is not confirmed? Perhaps they are doing this so they have another week to pester taker. Maybe Taker is already in the bag and the interwebs is completely derp like usual.

  • IamLisa

Seth M. Guttenplan, Lisa says… stop sucking CM Punk’s c0ck.
You are a journalist, aren’t you?
    Stop embarrassing yourself.

  • tmcfan15

A triple threat makes sense for all the reasons above. People are going to call people who say Punk deserves to main event WM 29 marks, but it’s not always about being a mark. Sometimes, talent and hard work need to be rewarded and that’s understood. I seriously doubt anyone would say Punk should never lose the title. That’s dumb. The problem here is in 434 days, which big name talent put over Punk except Jericho one on one clean? Nobody. The Cena endings were always controversial, he was booked silly weak against Ryberg and didn’t really go against anyone else. ONE clean win over Cena or Rock is all Punk needs. Even HHH didn’t put Punk over clean in 2011…in fact HHH had to win the match. Would Cena be where he was if HHH, HBK, and many other main eventers before him hadn’t have put him over? No way, those CLEAN wins were crucial into making Cena the star he is today.

  • Victor82

I said yesterday that this move gives the Undertaker one more week to decide if he will wrestle or not at WM. If he does, he will appear next week and set up the match against Punk. I he doesn’t, the match between Cena and Punk will have some dirty finish or a double DQ, and both will be added to the match with the Rock.

  • tomcatjerrymouse

I agree with everything, especially about CM Punk deserving to be in the main event. But I don’t see it happening because VKM wants The Rock/John Cena II and doesn’t care about who deserves to be in what, he only cares about the dollars.

  • http://www.facebook.com/joseph.douglas.96 Joseph Douglas

I think it will be a triple threat match but only so they can have Cena defeat them both at the same time. They are making too much of a big deal out of the fact that he has been unable to beat Punk and Rock. The triple threat would be made even more special if the night ended with CM Punk as the WWE champion, as a real sign of change. INstead of the obvious and predictable Cena getting his 13th or 14th world title.

  • Danny Morgan

I’m all for the triple threat, mainly because it will be more interesting and lets be honest cena is no austin and the rock aint in his prime anymore and we have seen weeks of dialogue between rock and cena leading upto last years mania. It makes total sense for punk to still want to chase the title plus hes gunna be here after mania. i only saw punk vs taker if the feud started weeks ago. the only other option would of been punk vs lesnar and have a face turn for one of them
so triple threat makes sense and is what fans want to see and will sell ppv buys. then we have at least one itneresting match on the card that is the main event and the title match

Guys, it’s not set in stone, so don’t take too much from this article. It’s very clear why they did this Cena-Punk match…they’re still waiting for an answer from Taker. They’ve set it up so that Taker has one more week to make up his mind. If he says yes, Cena wins (but it won’t be clean), Punk lays him out, then the bells toll and the arena goes dark. If not, we’ll have the triple threat. Do NOT look any further into this until next week’s Raw is over.

That said, I think Cena should beat Punk at least once, though hopefully it’s not a clean win, but I hope they do it at a PPV, not just as a build to WM.

John Cena does have victories over Cm Punk you know.

      • SdotC

        Oh. When?

        • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1851591342 Grannit Hashani

In 2011 when Punk was feuding with Kevin Nash. In late 2009 when Punk just started with Straight Edge Society, In 2011 inside the elimination chamber.

          • SdotC

Oh, okay thanks. I’d only count the single wins, and even though SES wasn’t Punk’s prime (in terms of how Vince views him) that still counts, and so does the late-11 match…don’t remember it but I believe you.

  • fj2305

A triple threat match is much more interesting than Cena/Rock 2… and that is all i have to say…

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1851591342 Grannit Hashani

If Cena / Rock 2 doesn’t happen at WM it will likely happen at Summerslam, Royal Rumble next year, or WM . So we will get Cena/Rock 2 again.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1851591342 Grannit Hashani

Why not just have Cm Punk go for the World Heavyweight Title ?

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1851591342 Grannit Hashani

since swagger’s push is gone cm punk can take over.
