According to The Ashbury Park Press, the 44 year old Mahoney’s cause of death was shown to be of natural causes. Charles Webster, spokesperson for the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office, gave a statement on the matter. He said that Mahoney had died due to hypertensive and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease.
“In other words, he had a heart attack,” said Webster.
Mahoney’s death sent shockwaves through the hearts of his former ECW cohorts. Tommy Dreamer recently related his feelings on the passing of Mahoney as a guest on the Wrestling News Source Podcast.
“It was horrible,” Dreamer said, “John was a hell of a nice person and we did a tribute at the House Of Hardcore show in Philadelphia where I said he was a crazy man but he was “our crazy man”. He was a character and besides that, the best thing I want to say about him was his love for his son. The saddest part now is his son grows up without a father.”
Dreamer concluded saying, “I don’t mourn peoples’ death, I celebrate their life. For anybody listening out there, go watch Balls Mahoney vs Rob Van Dam from ECW or Balls Mahoney and Spike Dudley vs The Dudley Boyz. Celebrate his life and enjoy whatever enjoyment he gave you.”
