While nothing has been confirmed, all signs point to John Cena vs. The Rock 2. The match simply makes no sense. It was almost two years ago, the WWE made a bold move. They booked these two men in a WrestleMania match with a full years notice. Anything could have happened and the match might have been scrapped in a second for a number of reasons. That wasn’t the case and the two headlined Wrestlemania in what was billed as “Once in a Lifetime.”
Looking at that title attached, it doesn’t hold much merit anymore. “Once in a Lifetime 2” doesn’t sound right, so why even call the match that? It makes the first meeting and yearlong buildup seem pointless if a rematch was going to taking place.
With such huge drawing names as The Rock and Cena, there’s no need to have them fight once again. With The Rock competing only a few times in the last decade, he should be fighting a fresh face. Still with a long future, Cena can fight anyone at WrestleMania. He’s the poster boy for the WWE and to compete with him on the grandest stage would be great to further the career of an up and comer, looking to solidify their career as a main eventer.
The first encounter between the two was far from a classic. It was just two different generations competing. They were a far cry from Shawn Michaels vs. Undertaker encounters. Those two stole the show each time. The Rock and Cena was simply a basic match with no moments that stood out. The buildup was far more interesting than the 20 plus minutes of action that took place in the ring.
Let’s remember, the rematch hasn’t been confirmed so maybe many are jumping to conclusions. What the WWE needs, is to have CM Punk and The Rock meet in a rematch at Wrestlemania. That’s what the fans want to see.
Their encounter at the Royal Rumble, while not a great match, had the crowd’s attention. While the fans in attendance seemed exhausted after the Royal Rumble match, there were plenty of Rock and CM Punk chants. The crowded seemed split and dare I say in favor of CM Punk.
The only reason I want to see a Rock-Cena rematch is because The Rock shouldn’t have won last year. He’s never around and comes when he can squeeze it into his movie schedule. He should have at least done the job to Cena. I guess that’s the point of this year’s WrestleMania, as Cena will get his revenge. Which leads to another question, is Rock vs. Cena 3 already being talked about?
