Damien Sandow and Cody Rhodes claim to be best friends, but a face turn by Rhodes could lead to another split up of the tag team.
Team Rhodes Scholars came together in August 2012 and began a feud with the tag team champions, Team Hell No. Sandow and Rhodes seem to be the one tag team that could unseat Kane and Daniel Bryan as champions. After numerous occasions, Team Rhodes Scholars have yet to win the titles. On the February 1st edition of Smackdown, Rhodes and Sandow announced that they would be returning to singles competition.
This split was short-lived though, as neither superstar was successful in singles matches. Team Rhodes Scholars reunited at Elimination Chamber and continue to team as recent as this past episode of Raw against both the New Age Outlaws and the team of Sheamus and Randy Orton. However, Cody Rhodes has been seen in backstage segments with WWE Divas champion Kaitlyn. The holder of the divas title is a babyface, making it intriguing that Rhodes would show any interest in Kaitlyn.
This past Monday night on Raw, Rhodes and Kaitlyn were seen flirting until Sandow and the Bella Twins joined the party. Kaitlyn walked off in disgust, as Rhodes initially seemed concern. It seems like an odd time for Rhodes to turn face as he and Sandow are an entertaining heel tag team that WWE desperately needs.
Sandow and Rhodes were unsuccessful as singles superstars, except for Rhodes’ reign as Intercontinental champion last year. Together, they are the biggest threat to Team Hell No’s tag team titles.
Cody Rhodes was a clean cut babyface when he first joined WWE in 2007, but it wasn’t until he turned heel and formed Legacy with Ted Dibiase Jr. and Randy Orton that people began to notice Rhodes.
Following the Legacy angle, Rhodes would begin a dashing gimmick, a narcissistic character who provided grooming tips. Not long after, Rhodes defeated Ezekiel Jackson for the Intercontinental title. Rhodes truly made a name for himself as he reintroduced the old school looking Intercontinental title and showed how well he could deliver promos.
It baffles me that WWE is even considering a face turn for Cody Rhodes. The son of WWE Hall of Famer Dusty Rhodes has truly found success as a heel. If he were to turn heel, it would also ruin Team Rhodes Scholars. The tag team shouldn’t have split up in February and fortunately; WWE realized its mistake and put the team back together.
Kaitlyn has not been featured much on WWE TV despite being WWE divas champion, but that shouldn’t surprise anyone. The divas division is the worst in the company, but that is probably why the Bella Twins returned. Perhaps their return and association with Team Rhodes Scholars on Raw will somehow involve Kaitlyn and her relationship with Rhodes.
Cody Rhodes is best off in the current tag team situation with Damien Sandow, but a future face turn could certainly work. WWE may just be teasing a possible turn with Rhodes and Kaitlyn flirting, but it would cause the second split up by Team Rhodes Scholars in just two months.
What do you think? Should WWE turn Cody Rhodes face? How would it affect Team Rhodes Scholars? Leave your thoughts in the comment section below.
