Top 10 WWE SummerSlam Title Matches...

As we get ready for this year’s big WWE SummerSlam spectacular, we take a look back at some of the best Title Matches held over the years. From Bret vs. Bulldog in 1992 to Orton vs. Benoit in 2004, check out some of our favorite SummerSlam Title Matches, in no particular order:

10. The Ultimate Warrior vs. The Honky Tonk Man
WWE Intercontinental Title Match
SummerSlam 1988

Honky was one of the longest reigning IC Champions but you wouldn’t know that by watching this match. Warrior won this one in about 30 legit seconds, his first WWE Intercontinental Title reign. Rumor has it Honky was the one who pitched the idea to have Warrior squash him.

9. HBK vs. Vader
WWE Title Match
SummerSlam 1996

I think I liked this one the most because of the hype behind Vader at the time plus I was a huge fan of Michaels and Vader. I remember the angle with Jose Lothario and remember how good those HBK days were.

8. Rob Van Dam vs. Chris Benoit
WWE Intercontinental Title Match
SummerSlam 2002

This was 17 minutes of pure awesomeness as The Whole F’n Show and The Crippler hooked up in the ring and tore the house down. Benoit entered the match holding the belt for SmackDown but RVD took it back to RAW in the end after a Five-Star Frogsplash.

7. Triple H vs. The Rock
WWE Intercontinental Title Match, Ladder Match
SummerSlam 1998

This is back when the Nation was feuding with DX and the days of wrestling were just great. The Rock of course was an awesome IC Champ but Triple H was due. At the time, this was one of the best Ladder Matches in WWE history.

6. Steve Austin vs. The Undertaker
WWE Title Match
SummerSlam 1998

This is another big match from the 1998 SummerSlam. The program that Austin and Taker worked that year was awesome. They even won the WWE Tag Team Titles together. The two brawled throughout this whole match and it ended in awesome Austin fashion. While I couldn’t find the actual video of the match, you’ll still enjoy the promo.

5. Mankind vs. Steve Austin vs. Triple H
WWE Title Match
SummerSlam 1999

This match featured three of the biggest WWE Superstars ever and was a great, classic WWE match. While Mankind walked away with the belt, Austin and Triple H were in awesome form that night. Plus, Jess “The Body” Ventura was the special referee. I couldn’t find the video on this one either, but check out the promo.

4. Edge & Christian vs. The Hardys vs. The Dudleys
WWE Tag Team Title Match, TLC Match
SummerSlam 2000

One of the best ever TLC matches I can remember seeing featuring three of the best WWE tag teams ever. This one went nearly 20 minutes and saw the Champions retain their belts. An awesome match.

3. Randy Orton vs. Chris Benoit
World Heavyweight Title Match
SummerSlam 2004

Truly an amazing match. Reversed Sharpshooters, six German suplexes, an attempted Crippler Crossface and an RKO later and Randy Orton became the youngest WWE World Heavyweight Champion. He definitley earned it after this one.

2. The Undertaker vs. Bret Hart
WWE Title Match
SummerSlam 1997

This entire pay-per-view was built around the battle between these two top Superstars. Actually, the whole show was built around The Hart Foundation actually. This SummerSlam was also the first one where the WWE Title changed hands. Another great match between Bret Hart and The Undertaker even though the special referee, Shwn Michaels, had a major impact on the ending.

1. Bret Hart vs. British Bulldog
WWF Intercontinental Title Match
SummerSlam 1992

This match was historic. While I don’t exactly remember watching every bit of it live, I definitley remember going to Blockbuster and begging to rent it for the weekend when it came out on VHS. This match saw these two family members go at it back and forth for the entire match. The end saw a new Champion crowned in his home country. From start to finish and then the aftermatch, this match was one of my favorite all-time WWE matches.
