- Here’s an interesting note on CM Punk’s match at the Great American Bash pay-per-view where he retained his World Heavyweight Title….
Punk became only the third wrestler in history to have his first WWE World Title defense on a pay-per-view going in as champion, counting only the WWE and World Title and not the ECW Title. Essentially this would mean the guy won the belt on a non pay-per-view event.
The first was Hulk Hogan at the Wrestling Classics pay-per-view, but that’s questionable because Hogan won the title for the first time in 1984 before there even was a pay-per-view. The other is Bret Hart, who won the belt in a TV taping dark match in 1992 when WWE was panicking about having no faces that were over. They needed to create a new face star immediately so Hart beat Ric Flair for the belt. Bret had never had a World Title match on pay-per-view but came into the 1992 Survivor Series as champion and defended against Shawn Michaels.
