Popular movie site Deadline reported today that WWE Studios, WWE’s movie division, have recently acquired the rights to the script for Bermuda, a horror film centred around the mysterious Bermuda Triangle.
The flick is written by British writers Bobby Lee Darby and Nathan Brookes, who previously penned the award-winning script Slaughter, which serves as a tribute to the Japanese cult horror phenomenon (the film is currently in pre-production and is scheduled to star Saw’s Shawnee Smith).
The premise for the movie is described as thus by Deadline: “Set in the Bermuda Triangle, the story focuses on a documentary film crew that goes missing. The only trace is the discovery of their film footage chronicling their final desperate days.”
WWE Studios president Michael Luisi commented on the deal to the site:”The Bermuda Triangle has always been an intriguing and mysterious setting.” He went on to say, “Bobby and Nathan’s script puts a very unique spin on the found footage genre.”
Interestingly, this plot follows the recent popular trend of “found-footage” horror films like Apollo 18, Paranormal Activity, REC and The Devil Inside. Despite patchy reviews, these movies went on to make an absolute killing at the box office, so WWE are showing a certain amount of astuteness by jumping on the bandwagon since this is clearly a money-making genre.
WWE are hardly the first to have a stab at delving into the secrets of the Bermuda Triangle. Due to the whopping amount of aircrafts and vessels that have mysteriously vanished there over the years, the area has been the subject of a wide array of television shows and movies, including SyFy mini-series The Triangle, which was produced by Bryan Singer and starred Sam Neill, and British horror movie Triangle, starring Melissa George.
