Former Writer Talks About Raw Continuing After Lawler’s Heart Attack

Steven Muehlhausen of Fight Club Chicago spoke with former WWE Creative Writer Court Bauer this week about Jerry Lawler’s medical emergency on Monday’s Raw and whether WWE was right to continue with the show.

“You can always debate that, but on the flip side, if he had died obviously it’s a whole new ballgame. They were in the process of trying to stabilize him and perform CPR. You had roughly about an hour left in the show. I’m sure you can coordinate with USA network to just jump into a re-run of one their programs and just be joined in progress.”

“Their is a lot of pride in promoters like Dana White in that the show must go on and when you can’t do that, it’s like your worst case scenario and its catastrophic. In this case, I felt they did a great job in regrouping by the end. It’s still so peculiar to me seeing a ten minute promo between Cena, Punk and Bret Hart. It just felt so weird and their was such a disconnect from it because real life was unfolding and there was something very real and crazy going on backstage.”

“From a business point of view, yes you are living to your obligation with the USA Network, but I don’t think any of that will capture anyone to buy Night of Champions. It will be a blur to people with what was said between Punk and Cena.”

um….no! Im not a cena fan, but even with what was going on backstage he cut one hell of a promo with bret and punk.

I totally agree with his comment, I honestly cannot remember any of the promo. I’ve watched WWE for about 20 year or so now though and I am a big Lawler fan though. Was all very distressing.

I don’t know about that @VIRU5. While watching the promo, all I could do is think about Jerry. And yes I knew it was good and funny but by the time I woke up I had forgotten about it. I had to re watch pretty much the last hour of Raw just to remember everthing that happened

  • Bad News Bro

I tend to watch Raw on delay, so I was able to find out Jerry’s condition before I reached the end.

Cena/Punk had possibly the best promo of 2012 last Monday, and it’s been greatly overshadowed by this dark and unfortunate tragedy. If you have the means, I suggest that you go back and watch that whole segment again. On any given night, that’d be considered a great promo. Considering the circumstances, Punk, Cena, and Bret all deserve more than just a tip of the hat for how well they were able to keep it together and still deliver.

The people did not know If Jerry would be alive by the end of the day.

bad news bro’s has a good angle on it. I understand the magnitude of what was going on but cena and punk had an amazing pre-ppv promo. It wasn’t funny …it was business. Watch it again.. IMO best work since the “pipe bomb” promo.
