New Day Rocks: But Are We Seeing The Last Of Them?

Xavier Woods
I’ve been writing about the New Day needing a solid program for a while now. Something seemed to be brewing with them and The Club, but after a couple of matches on RAW, that has taken a swerve since Money in the Bank (MITB), as all three members (Luke Gallows, Karl Anderson, and AJ Styles) are now more focused on John Cena. Alas, post MITB, the New Day are now preoccupied with mocking The Wyatt Family: and this new program has not only seen these two factions battle on the mic, but also battle with the mind games as well.

And then there is Xavier Woods.

The program, from the on set, has been entertaining. Mix the New Day’s mocking antics, with a returning Wyatt Family (and all their creepy, cryptic messages), and you have program gold. Matches are sure to be stellar. However, the only concerning aspect of this entire feud, is the long-term angle this storyline may be taking.

Xavier has been clearly unsettled by the Wyatts, and this was prevalent from the moment the New Day interrupted their return on the June 20th edition of Monday Night RAW. Sure, it was all fun and games (and an incredible watch) when the New Day showed up, amped with their ‘power of positivity’ message, dancing their way down the ramp; onto the loom and gloom of the Wyatts in the ring. But once Bray began spewing his message, Xavier’s face said it all, his fear of the ‘Eater of Worlds’ trickled down into the June 27th edition of RAW, when The New Day took the program to new levels by mimicking the Wyatt Family’s creepy promos, and entrance. While all that was fabulous to watch, at the end of the day, I can’t help but speculate where this program will end up.

The Wyatts need a feud to help them rebuild their faction’s credibility as a stable that is feared within the WWE. Brand extension or not, their return had to be dominating; and Bray’s new spin on an old tag line (New Day falls) is not only clever, but perhaps foreshadowing on what’s to come for the New Day.

But will Xavier Woods be the weak link for the New Day, crushed by fear and intimidation, as the Wyatt’s dominate in this program; or will he jump ship, and join the Wyatt Family?

I have mix emotions on all this.

On the one hand, The New Day have had an incredible run. While Paul London and Brian Kendrick still hold the spot for longest reigning WWE tag team champions, The New Day are in the history books with the longest combined days with the title. The trio have been simply dominated WWE’s tag team division for over a year now, and helping another faction over by ‘losing’ a program (especially at the hands of a shaken Woods) won’t bury these three guys at all. However, if the plan is for Woods to join the Wyatts, well that’s another thing completely.

On the one hand, this may be an interesting revelation, if done correctly. The Wyatts have not been able to recruit a member (aside from Braun Strowman, which was positioned as if he had really always been a part of things) from the roster, since they tried with Daniel Bryan in 2014. In a lot of ways, Bryan, releasing himself from the Wyatts, hurt the stable at the time (among other things The Family has endured). So, Woods, moving in, would make for an interesting plot. Especially, since things will be shaken up, with the draft taking place, in mere weeks, on the first live edition of SmackDown, July 19th.

Still, breaking up The New Day, would also break up the incredible chemistry between Woods, Kofi Kingston, and Big E; a trio that were able to break through a bad gimmick, and shared a wonderful underdog success story within the WWE. They are well over with fans, the team is creative, works very well together, and put on some entertaining matches, not to mention their highly-entertaining promos. When RAW needs a spot filler, that fans won’t complain about, they can send in the New Day. Break them up? And they lose that. It’s a little confusing as to why the WWE would even ponder the idea of breaking up The New Day at this point in time, as the stable is so popular, and still has oh-so many stories that can be told. The Freebird-esque trio has brought a unique twist to the tag team division, something that has not been seen for a while, and it has been refreshing to see the tag team division finally fire up; and the New Day has been a big part of this.

Still, as with most factions within the company, all good things must come to an end. The true testament of a superstar’s talent and longevity is their resiliency to be able to ride the wave, but also have the staying power to move storylines along, allow for change, yet rise above it, and continue to evolve.

Here’s hoping The New Day can dig deep into their ‘power of positivity’ message, should they land in splitsville.

WNZ fans, who do you think this storyline will unfold? Will The Wyatt Family simply dominate over the New Day, or will they be able to snag a fearful Xavier Woods into their stable? Leave your comments below – I’d love to hear from you!

I can see taking the belts because they’re so over but the where number one in merch over wrestle mania I don’t see them giving that up so easily

        • jcice13

the same reason Vince won’t turn Cena is why he shouldn’t ruin new day….they make him money

  • Crazy_Victor

I don’t know if Luke Harper is coming back soon, but it’s time for New Day to add a fourth member, and he’ll be No Way Jose. Fits perfectly.

    • Y2J

I know very little about the No Way Jose gimmick and I still don’t like it

instead of adding someone like say Xavier they should get Daffney to be sister Abigail.she’d make a great crazy chick character.they should have done it long ago..even TNA beat them to this punch

the New Day are slowly starting to get stale tbh. You can hear the New Day Sucks creeping in, even if its a few right now, you can still make it out. And this is even before Wyatts returned. And yes the WWE universe are sheep, but still your most over superstars were being chanted “New Day Falls” last week.

I dont know about Xavier joining Wyatts etc, but the end of the new day is a very strong possibility or if they stay together, another heel run.

      Hmm idk

I’m probably the unpopular opinion but I’ve never really cared for the new day at all. They confuse me and I just don’t understand their image. As heels they made no sense because they were bad guys but did goofy things and tried to make ppl laugh. They do a better job of that as faces but when I see them idk what they’re trying to do cuz it’s just so random. Idk what unicorns have to do with trombones, or dancing or positivity. I guess maybe just that light hearted nature in itself is what they’re trying to stand for but maybe comedy in wrestling just isn’t my thing..

I don’t see why or any reason for them to put Xavier IN with the Wyatts, but to have him be put in some spell or is so fearful that he wrecks New Day’s run with the belts?? well that’s something

I’m hoping it is all just a ruse, with ND intentionally calling out the Wyatts and then Woods just pretending to be scared to make the Wyatts think they have an edge to exploit.
