Potential Opponent For CM Punk’s UFC Debut

Former WWE star and now UFC fighter CM Punk, whose real name is Phil Brooks, might have an opponent for his UFC debut.

UFC President Dana White may have found the man to fight the inexperienced Punk. Mickey Gall, a 1-0 fighter from New Brunswick, N.J., caught White’s after his fight that will be airing on White’s reality series, “Dana White: Looking for a Fight.”

White is now “interested” in the newcomer. Gall quickly submitted his opponent in his professional debut and made the most of the attention. Following the fight, Gall did a post-fight interview and called out Punk.

“Hey Dana White, I don’t know if CM Punk has an opponent,” Gall said afterward in the cage, “but I would love to fight that man.”

White was slightly in shock and told him, “I like where your heads at” while offering congratulations.

“I haven’t heard from Dana White. I’m hoping. I’m around,” Gall told MMA Fighting.com. “I think they’re still trying to figure things out. Now I’m starting to get the buzz, and people are sending me these articles. My phone’s been blowing up with websites posting how I’m probably going to be his opponent. I only hope. I hope, man.”

Punk is expected to fight sometime in 2016. Most think that he’ll fight at UFC 200 for various reasons. For one, it will be the UFC’s biggest show of 2016. Also, the UFC believes that Punk will be a big draw for them on PPV and thus would pop a big buy rate for them with all of the WWE fans tuning in to see him either get his butt kicked or somehow win his first MMA bout in the world’s largest MMA promotion.

Not sure if UFC 200 would be a good spot for this match if it were to take place. That ppv will sell no matter what. With an expected rematch between Holm and Rousey that’s what will sell that ppv. If UFC was smart and this match was to go ahead, then perhaps place it on 199 or 201.

So why not put that match in 200?

Just taking a view from Dana White’s shoes, it doesn’t make financial sense to overstock that one show when it will sell based on the women’s rematch and possibly McGreggor defending. Jon Jones is also back and that will also sell other ppv’s.

Oh ok so overbooking in 1 UFC ppv event will just ruin it for other ppv events?

          • MEH

Not necessarily ruin the other ppv, I just think that people will be tuning into watch Punk’s first match in droves. You have the wrestling fans who will be tuning in as its Punk’s first match and their interested to see how he will fair, then the MMA fans will tune in to see him get his butt whipped! Just makes financial sense to me not to put it on that particular card even though the card will be stacked for that event. Just my own opinion if I was a Booker.

            Oh ok

UFC 100 was overloaded as well, that’s the whole point. It is a milestone event, and it SHOULD be overloaded. UFC 100 did 1.6 million buys. If they hope to surpass that, they better overload the hell out of it. It also makes sense for Punk to debut on the most-watched event of the year, to build the hype train.

I understand where your coming from. Yes overload the card but don’t cripple your potential earnings down the line with your upcoming ppv’s. You don’t blow your load the first time you lock eyes and touch a girl do you? Same rule applies. Your not going to blow your Wrestlemania card by overloading it with dream matches are you with nothing left for SummerSlam, if you say yes you could never be a Booker.

UFC 100 had three PPV main event worthy matches on a single card, which is why it was their most successful event in history. It even out-sold Wrestlemania 28, the best-selling Mania ever. I suspect they will go for the same formula with UFC 200, three big matches, including the Punk match.

“caught White’s after his fight that will be airing on White’s reality series, “Dana White: Looking for a Fight.”
    So many rhymes.

Alas we all know Punk would pick a nobody to say he’s the real deal :’D
