It was the moment many have been waiting for since The Empress of Tomorrow won the first-ever Women’s Royal Rumble back in January. It’s booked, it’s happening, dreams are becoming reality. The WWE Universe shall see Charlotte Flair vs. Asuka come Wrestlemania 34.

Most fans anticipated something would happen come the SmackDown LIVE women’s match at Fastlane. Would Carmella cash-in her Money in the Bank (MITB) briefcase or would Asuka finally make her decision about who she is facing come April 8th. The latter would come to fruition, and while many expected the moment, Asuka pointing to that Wrestlemania sign dangling above the arena still delighted the live Columbus crowd and viewers watching from home.

And upon reflection, this is the best choice for Asuka, the WWE, Charlotte Flair, and Wrestlemania. Asuka has had a tremendous main roster debut since she hit Monday Night RAW in the fall of 2017. Railroading all her competitors, including Nia Jax more recently, a WM win against Alexa Bliss might have been a given; however, does a win by The Queen seem likely? To be frank, when I look at Asuka vs. Charlotte Flair, either outcome seems out of the water. Flair beating Asuka’s streak, at WM, when the Empress of Tomorrow is on such fire, seems impossible; in turn, Asuka defeating the Queen seems out of this world.

Still, the buildup to this bout and the match itself, should be incredible. While RAW continues to create and book Wrestlemania matches that appease the masses and zero in on sports entertainment marketability, SmackDown LIVE is producing true wrestling matches that loyal and longstanding fans can sink their teeth into: Shinsuke Nakamura vs. AJ Styles is a fine example of this; Charlotte Flair vs. Asuka is also one.

Still, does MITB come into play? It sure is a huge element in all this. Carmella pulling a Seth Rollins and cashing in on the Grandest Stage of Them All is also a big possibility. After all, she has yet to do so and the clock is ticking. Carmella and the MITB factor also creates another layer to this match, whether by potential or reality. In the back of every fan’s mind come April 8th, Carmella will be on the radar; if she enters the match, she could produce an ending where neither Flair or Asuka truly lose against each other, yet neither walk out champion. And to go one step further, if Carmella does cash-in, Asuka’s streak will be over, allowing her the opportunity to close this incredible chapter in her WWE career (without really losing), and move on to bigger and brighter milestones as she continues to carve out her wrestling legacy.

So yes, I’m looking forward to Charlotte Flair vs. Asuka, and now that the match is finally (and officially) booked, it’s time to sit back and enjoy the promos.
