There were no title changes at Saturday’s NXT Takeover: Orlando and the WWE Network exclusive as a whole was alright. Here’s a report on each match from Takeover: Orlando’s main card, with a grade attached. Don’t agree with a grade, then feel free to score the show.
There was some decent hype for Aleister Black with weeks worth of videos. In the end, the debut wasn’t impressive enough where I think Black can be NXT Champion. He had some stiff shots, especially the spinning head kick at the end, though a lack of connection with the fans felt present. Andrade “Cien” Almas looks impressive in the ring, but needs to start winning at the Takeover shows.
Grade: B- We got a last minute change with Kassius Ohno replacing No Way Jose. Not sure who No Way Jose was written out, but Ohno was the right replacement. Sanity needs to works on their timing; they felt a little off. Ruby Riot and Nikki Cross could make for an interesting feud. This match was about Tye Dillinger still being unable to stop Sanity after rejecting their offer to join. Good match to start the show.
Grade: B Asuka was looking to retain her title for a full year during this historic reign. Ember Moon suffered her first defeat and Asuka continues to look unbeatable in NXT. It might get to the point where Asuka vacates the belt and goes to the main roster. I do wish WWE would decide if Asuka is heel or face. Based off the ending, she was a heel in Orlando.
Grade: B Compared to the first meeting, this encounter was better. Nice slow start and a fiery ending without going too crazy with finishers. It’s a little disappointing how WWE keeps going with Nakamura hurting his knee. Bobby Roode has quickly become the star of NXT and a major push on the main roster could follow.
Grade: B+ It was a triple threat match, but DIY and The Revival put their differences to the side for a short time; giving fans an almost handicap match. The table spot and suplex to the outside were amazing. Once DIY was eliminated, The Revival didn’t give much of a fight. We witnessed how DIY and The Revival can make other (weaker) teams look stronger. I wouldn’t be surprised if DIY and The Revival head to the main roster.
