Heading into WrestleMania 34, there was uncertainty if Shane McMahon would be able to compete due to illness. WWE already were under the impression Shane & Daniel Bryan vs. Kevin Owens & Sami Zayn would be one of the matches. WWE did have a backup plan involving Chris Jericho.
“A few weeks before WrestleMania, maybe three or four weeks, I get a call from Vince,” said Jericho on his podcast Talk is Jericho. “And he’s talking about Shane and his diverticulitis and he had an infection in his hand and he had, there was one other thing as well, hernia, that was it. And he goes, ‘Listen, we don’t know if he can do Mania.’”
Of course, Shane worked through the pain and he came out victories with Bryan. Jericho was not involved in the show and knew getting to the arena would take a police escort because he was having a concert with Fozzy.
Since then, Jericho did appear as the final entrant of the 50 person Great Royal Rumble match from Saudi Arabia. He also returned to New Japan Pro Wrestling by attacking Tetsuya Naito.
