WWE posted the following statement regarding Paige’s retirement from in-ring competition last night due to neck injuries.
Paige retires from in-ring competition
Citing medical reasons, Paige made the difficult decision to retire from in-ring competition during the April 9 edition of Monday Night Raw after four years in WWE.
In an emotional address, the brave Superstar thanked Daniel Bryan for his inspiration, WWE Hall of Famer Edge for showing her there is life after sports-entertainment, the WWE Universe for their support and WWE for allowing her to do what she loves to do.
A trailblazing Superstar who won the Divas Championship in her Monday Night Raw debut, Paige truly made the most of her four-year career and will surely find tremendous success in whatever she chooses to do next.
Paige had made her long-awaited return to action back in November after a layoff of 17 months. The next month during a WWE Live event, Paige took a kick to the upper back from Sasha Banks which rendered her unable to continue. She could be seen in some fan footage being unable to keep her legs under her as the ref threw up the ‘X’ to indicate a real injury had occurred to stop the match. The kick from Banks was nothing over-the-top and wouldn’t appear to be a botch on her part. The injury seems more like it was a ticking time-bomb waiting to go off.
The news of her forced retirement hit the public awareness months ago, but she made it publicly official last night live on Raw. After delivering the announcement, Paige received a swell of support from people all over social media.
She responded to the support in the tweet below:
Completely overwhelmed with the love and support. Thank you everyone. Seriously means so much to me. This isn't the end though. Just the beginning of something special. #ThankYou #ThisIsMyHouse pic.twitter.com/WUhEKdXfMd
